This might seem like a strange question, but I recently replaced the oil pan seal on my '97 D1 with 103K miles. While I was there, I got a good look at the bottom of the crankshaft, and it was a caramel-brown/tan color. I soon plan to replace the valve cover gaskets also.

What is a "good" color for the rocker arms and other visible internal engine parts with 103K miles? I would assume that as long as there is not something like black tar on them they are ok. Just curious because I would like to spot any potential problems.

light brown color which means that the engine is regularly maintained and is in good condition.
You can check the RPi Engineering website, www.rpiv8.com . They have all the color indicators mentioned in their website.
If your crankshaft is caramel colored I beleive that it means that your engine is well serviced and is in a healthy condition. The same applies for the rocker shafts.

Took me awhile to find the page on rpiv8.com with the color indicators so thought I'd paste it in here..
