I have a high milage 95 D1. After changing plugs (due to a cylinder not firing, but getting spark) I noticed that one plug was coated in oil. Replaced the plug and checked plug three days later when I noticed it was not firing. Pulled the plug and it was covered in oil again. Truck has loss of power but no hard pinging or anything. The truck in in the shop now getting a compression test/leak down test. Since I know oil is flowing through the cylinder, am I screwed? I know nothing about engines so I can't begin to guess what the problem and remedy could be. Any ideas or advice?

It depends on whats broken, if it is the head gasket replace it. If it's the pistion it depends on the damage to the Pistion. Options are, if it is cracked or burnt you'll need to replace it. If there is no damage to the Pistion and you have only blown an oil ring, you just pull the pistion, hone the cylinder, replace all the rings with new ones (matched to the cylinder size), put the pistion back in and off you go.

Mr Velocet

What grit flex-hone would you recomend using to finnish a Rover V8 cylinder bore. My main concern is correct oil control for the rings.

One of my new engine blocks has some rust stains on the cylinder sleeves. I wanted to restore the finnish. There are several grit sizes, and I don't want to guess. There is no mention in the LR engine manual about which size to use.

Randall, This is a question that I would refer to my engineer, local machinist, or LR mechanic. I am familiar with the process of pistion replace ment but I leave the measuring specifications etc up to the engine buliders. I built an engine for my 69 Alfa and repiared a burnt cylinder on an MG I used to own, I can't recall the grit I used on the MG, I got a matched set of cylinders and pistions when I rebuilt the Alfa engine. Thankfully I have not had to do major engine work on my 95 Disco (knock wood).
