Fellow Landy Owners-
My 95 D1 has been suffering a new malady for the past 24 hours. Perhaps is the cold weather, perhaps it's not.

Since yesterday morning, the engine has been bogging down after a cold startup. Perhaps the engine is still cold but hit the gas and the thing chokes, burps and almost stops.

I've also noticed that the Amber Check Engine light is no longer illuminated and since it's usually on, I am a bit concerned. As I drive down the street, every two-three miles or so, the engine will give a slight seize, the amber engine light will flash on briefly and then the D1 will continue. It's like tapping on the brakes and is quite noticeable and disconcerting.

Finally, the idle seems to be screwy. As I'm driving and slow down (not necessarily to stop), the rpms will drop and the engine will just cut out.

Any thoughts on what is going on?

Thanks!

Jay,
With your Rover it could be lots of things. Did put all those tune up parts to use yet? PM goes a long way. Sounds like it could be a bad or dirty stepper motor. Clean it out, real simple and easy attempt. Is your ecu diagnostics under the passanger seats throwning a code? You can also try cleaning out the inside of your truck every once in a while, for that is known to cause screwy idles :-) How was Hawaii? Let me know if you need any help.

"Its like tapping on the brakes and is quite noticeable and disconcerting."

At least now you know what it feels like to have brakes :-)

Drew-
Thanks for the thoughts. Have you paid your cell phone bill yet? Hawaii was a good time though.

Damn, still need to get those Magnecores!

Wow, just imagine if you guys didn't like each other!
Jay, I saw these antics you describe just the other day. I waved but I guess you didn't recognize me in Andrea's Subaru.
If it's running that poorly, why don't you drop at my dad's house, and let him drive it in. We are a little light on appointments right now, and I have hired an apprentice, so I could use a test case on his skills.
Interested?

Trevor-
Sorry to have missed you, it was unintentional. Was that the other day coming up beaver dam road and I'm barely making it up the little incline? If so, I do recall someone behind me but since I no longer have a right side mirror and the rear view mirror fell off (again), I'm somewhat blind!

Well, the Disco finally took a dump last night outside of Bicycle Bistro on Light Street downtown. Waited until 2am for the AAA guy to come and got the disco back home around 3am. Just another day in the Land Rover Lifestyle.

Been trying to get the thing somewhat running this morning - replaced some broken vacuum lines, replaced the distributor cap and rotor but still nothing but a churning starter. If nothing happens soon, I will probably be calling you!

Thanks!

Chris-
I'm afraid I do not have an ECU diagnostics reader to read the code.

Drew-
They say a cluttered Disco is the sign of a brilliant mind. Personally, I just think it's the sign of a cluttered mind but I digress. Are you ever going to pay that cell phone bill? I've been trying to reach you since I returned.

I don't believe in brakes.

Cell Phone? I'm starting to regress with communications. Soon I want to be able just to communicate using just morse code, then finally just smoke signals. I'll give you a call. You can reach me at home or e-mail.
No Brakes..still using the force OB1.

On '95 Disco check the connection from the wiring harness to the ignition amplifier on the side of the distributor. They have a habit of unseating just enough to cause intermittant spark. Push it down firmly.

I had similar problems on my '94 and it turned out to be a cooked ignition amp. It took a while to die, causing intermittent problems. The factory manual has a decent troubleshooting section which should help you isolate it. Also, the wiring between the amp and coil rides around in a pretty hot place. Check continuity while wiggling it around. It'd be worth checking the HT lead off the coil, wiggle it around with the engine running and see if you misfire.

Good luck.
