Has anyone had the pleasure of changing this solenoid before? Can it be done from underneath the vehicle? This is on a 99 DII... TIA, Spencer |

You do it from the top side - it's a pain, but doable. If you're going to the trouble of getting to it - just take it out and don't replace it. >remove console >unhook handbrake >remove shifter >remove shifter plate (on a D1 it is riveted in - replace with sheet metal screws) >then with an interesting combination of 1/4" drive extensions and universals - unbolt solenoid housing cover (4-bolts). Much swearing involved in this step. >Remove solenoid - seal up housing and bolt it back down >reinstall everything you took out

Are you talking the shift interlock solenoid on the transfer case shifter or the transmission shift lock solenoid on the transmission selector? Same function, big difference in replacement procedure. |

Bill/Craig, thanks for the replies. Here is the symptoms on DII w/ 85K miles: cannot shift the transfer case into low. My brother recently bought the truck, but prior to the purchase, he shifted into low and the indicator did not buzz or light when it was neutral (passing from high to low). Now it will not shift into low at all. According to the manual, I am not quite sure which it is. Due to the lack of the light/buzz in neutral, I am guessing that the neutral switch is bad. What exactly is the function of the shift interlock solenoid on the transfer case? Bill suggested removing it and leaving it out...since the solenoid has a lead on it, will it throw any codes by not plugging into the lead? Thanks again for the help! |

Interlock solenoid prevents you from shifting into low range other than when in neutral. It shouldn't thrown any codes as it is not part of the engine management ECU. It defintely does not on a D1 Bill |

Spencer, I have to ask in order to rule out other causes so here goes... You've made sure he's rolling forward slowly with transmission in Neutral while attempting to shift to Low Range? Now, it sounds like there are two separate issues here. One is the sensor between high and low... the one that triggers the chime when the t-case is in neutral. It sounds as if yours may be unplugged. The second problem is the apparent inability to shift the transfer case to low range. The transfer box interlock solenoid that prevents the transfer case from being left in Neutral when the key is removed from the ignition. There is also a Shift Interlock Solenoid that does what Bill describes. That sounds like it may be your shifting problem. Unplugging any of these should not yield a code being generated. |
