Is there anyone out there running 255/85s. Where do you keep the spare. I read the tech article on the EE site, its for the 265/75 and looks like a tight fit. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks |

Jeff A has that size on his '97 D1.... He installed a tire mount on his roof-rack to hold the spare. -L

I did the math: you need a tad less than 3/4" more room than what is required for a 265 (from the EE inverting directions). I'd go out and measure my rig to see if there is 3/4" more, but I drove the wife's car. I actually do not think there is... Maybe you could invert the tire carrier AND make something like this: http://www.disco2.com/market/products/summittyrelocator/ (you cannot use this one if you invert your carrier b/c it would be upside down) Maybe you could have one made with 3/4" more clearance and not have to invert the tire carrier? Maybe there is 3/4" additional clearance? I can measure when I get home if no one knows... |

tom, i added a 1/4" spacer between the door and carrier. i used 2 pieced of 1/4 " flat stock, 3/4" wide and i cut them the same length as the tire carrier. by spacing the carrier out 1/4" i leaves you plenty of space for that size tire whether it's a bgf mt or a truxxus mt. some have inverted the carrier and redrilled, which seems to work also but then you have to address the rear wiper, and some have let the tire rest on the rear bumper to carry some of the additional weight , this also works but i did not like the tire dragging on the bumper when i opened the door. also by spacing the carrier, the carrier remains in the stock position with relation to the wheel (i.e. two lugs at the top, one lug at the bottom). in the end, they all work fine. marc |

I have a 255/85r16 BFG MT on my stock carrier. I inverted the carrier and put on the new tire. It's a snug fit, but it rests nice and tight on the bumper. |

Bill B, if i'm not mistaken, i believe that the Rover Connection mount is also made by Mike Judd @ summit machine (the one that Bill Mallin suggests). Mike follows this board from time to time, maybe he will chime in. his stuff is of the highest quality and he is responsible for most of the cool stuff that GBR, Rubicon Express and Factory Tubular carry. and I have no affiliation with Summit Machine, other than being Salt Lake locals. marc |

Every 255/85 will vary in size from one manufacturer to antother. Its usually not much but it makes a difference. My 98' D1 holds a 255/85 trxus with no mods but they are 32.9" on a 7" rim. A BFG is 33.3" on a 7" rim and probably won't fit so look up your exact tire size on your rim and if it 33" or less it should fit. |

Tom, If you look at the photo's on Insoo's page ( roverconnection.com )it shows my Disco fitted with 265-75-16 Truxxus tires. This will give you a little idea of what our Tyre re-locator will provide. If you need slightly more clearance we can make a custom re-locator for the same price. Let me know. On a side note for any sales generated from the Discoweb I will donate 5% for this outstanding site. |
