I have been looking at getting some all terrain tires for the Disco. I have a pretty good idea that they all will perform similarly, so which ones will look the most suitable on the Disco? I have been considering the Bridgestones(previously used on other disco), BFG, Yokohama, and to a lesser extent the Dunlop Radial Rover RV. I dont really need mud traction but need a toughly constructed tire that can handle mild off roading. Anyone have any strong opinions on these. Personally I think the BFG looks good on everything. BTW, please dont lambaste me for caring about the appearance of my vehicle.

Easy question. For all-terrains... BFGs. 3-ply side walls. Done.

I've given mine hell off-road, and they have been great. They are also great on the highway.

That said, there will be many opinions on this one.

I personally love the Yokohama Geolander A/T II's. I run those for my daily driver tires and have been very satisfied. I work in quite a few remote spots and they do very well offroad and have held up well. I'm at about 20-25k on them and they are just above the point of being half worn.

The ones that look the best are the ones you like the best!

Not all tires perform the same - so if you are looking for preformance. You really need to evaluate your need, what do you need the tire to do, what do you expect the tire to do. That'll narrow the field.

Don't be affraid of ugly tires bro, your rig will still look better than an H2 even if you need to keep the doors closed with speed tape, and bailing wire!

Robert, I do like the Yokos and they seem to be a good value. Where in Ktown did you get yours? Did they do a good job with installation? Brian, I know what you are saying, but I think some tires look better on the Disco than others, and I do know some tires perform different than others! Haha, what I meant was that for my needs those tires listed above would all satisfy my needs.
Thanks
Matt

I have used BFG ATs in the past and they've been great. I currently have Dunlop Mud Rovers, which have a little bit softer sidewalls than BFG AT, but the Dunlops are better offroad IMHO.

I have Bridgestone AT's. They ride really well on road, i.e. quiet and smooth, but they appear to be wearing very fast. I got them last March and they are already worn conciderabily, (about 15,000 miles). BFG all-terrains are heavier/beefier and work really well on and off-road. I had them on my Explorer and they lasted forever.

For a Disco1, my favorite is the Michelin XPS Traction in 235/85. Same construction as the Michelin XZL, with four steel belts on the tread and a steel-belted sidewall. Kick ass tire.

I've had Yoko Geolandar AT +II's since June, and love them. The sidewalls are soft, 'tis true, but they are relatively quiet, tough, and grippy. I got 'em for what appears to be a ridiculously low price (compared to comparable AT tires, performance-wise) at Tire Rack.

Cooper Discoverer S/T's are a pretty aggressive all-terrain tire. They can be had at a very reasonable price, they are not loud on road and handle nicely, also quite meaty off-road. For someone who does a lot of pavement driving, and seldom off road trips, this is a good tire to look in to.

appearance of the vehicle is very impotant.

what kind of look are you trying to achieve? rugged good looks? civilized good looks?

I am not really trying to achieve a certain look as much as I am wanting a tire that looks approptiate. I saw a Disco the other day with Goodyear Wrangler ATS and thought the tires looked goofy on the vehicle. Must have been the sidewall design or something.

I ran a set of Dunlop Radial Rover RT's on my Trooper and REALLY liked them. They were phenomenal in the snow and ice, better then the BFG AT's in my experience. They were also a bit more aggressive for light offroading. The edge lucks stick out a bit more then the BFG AT's.

They are a bargain too, around $100/tire.

I like the way they looked too. :-)

BFG ATs are by far the toughest tires I have owned. I have beat the shit outta them and they still look brand new. Perfect for the contruction sites I work on. Never had a problem with the sidewalls at all. They cost a lot at first but they last. On average with all of the trucks my family has owned the tires went 80-90K miles, the longest lasting ones went 118K, of course these basically had no tread left. Plain and simple BFG is a very heavy duty tire IMHO, I highly recommend them.

the key here is sticking with a 235/85 for best look.

adjust aggressiveness of the tread to support your driving style.

And don't forget to have the white letter-side facing out, so everyone can read what brand you have!

Right, guys? White letters out? :-)

I just got some GoodYear M/Ts they look great and proform well. They are replacing a set of BFG A/Ts which were also fantastic tires. I just wanted a more aggressive tire look

Since Robert brought it up already with the Goodyear M/T, I'll throw out that I switched from BFG A/T's-which were very good, tough tires to BFG M/T's, which I think look even better, and I haven't reall noticed any detrimental effects as compared to the ride with the A/Ts. Then again my daily commute is only 5 miles door to door, but why not go all the way and get a set of M/T's?

Yeah Go Vols! Having gone to Furman University (small) whose football team drew crowds about the size of what a Kia press event would it is nice to be a part of big college sports. Anyhow, I am hoping to go try out the tires today, I will let yall know how they do. Thanks for the opinions. BTW, thanks Jamie, my dogs name is Maggie. She is mischevious and is thus relegated to the cargo area of the Rover only.

Ray and Robert,

What size Goodyear MTR's did you get? I'm running 265/75-16 BFG AT KO's now but was amazed at the MTR's I saw competing at the Goodyear/Skyjacker rockcrawling nats in Moab last year.

Just wondering specifically about noise and ride quality differences from the BFG AT's.

Thanks

Shawn-
Robert has the Goodyears, I switched to the BFG Mud Terrains from All Terrains. I'm running 255/85/16's (I was running 265/70/16 in the AT) and I really haven't noticed a significant degredation in ride quality or noise between the two tires. Then again, I could be a glutton for punishment or something, and my truck is pretty damn loud these days for a variety of reasons-none of which are due to the tires :-) Suffice it to say, since I haven't noticed anything worse for the wear, I am very happy with the change and I really like the look and size of the tires on my truck now.

OK, simple answer to a simple question.

Here in Saudi Arabia the 'stock' size tyre delivered with my Disco Series II were 235/70/16 on 'Meteor' 7x16 alloys.

Can I put 265/75/16 tyres on a rim this size or do I need a wider rim?

Cheers

Jeremy-
Check out this link to BFG:
http://www.bfgoodrichtires.com/assets/pdf/all_terrain_ta_kd.pdf

Bottom line: according to their specs, a 265 width tire is fine on a 7" wide wheel, its the bottom edge of the range, but fine.
I had my AT's on 7" wide wheels, and they were fine.
Hope that helps, have fun in the Kingdom!

LR put 265/75-16s on US defenders with 7 inch rims so sounds fine to me!

One thing to consider, My last set of big O's got me 94k miles. I was pretty maticulas about rotations, allignments, and balancing, but to me that's a deal in itself, not to mention the warantee, My other rover has the michelin AT's, and it looks like I'll be lucky to get 35k out of them with the same mainenance schedual. Plus teh Michelins were $40 more a tire than my Big O's, and there wasn't a huge notacability in handling.

Thanks the lot guys.

For a moment there I thought I was going to have to fork out for a new set of wheels.

All I'm worried about now is how I'm going to stay awake until 02:00 to watch the Superbowl!!

Cheers

I too am looking for new tires and have really liked the overall performance of my Michelin LTXs. However, they have worn pretty quickly...but I KNOW i didn't rotate them correctly/often enough.

I want something that is about the same ride quality and still quiet on the road. My husband has BFG A/T that I think are WAY too loud. I also liked the fact that my Michelins didn't get too gunked up when off-roading in mud at MAR. They seem to have good grip in all weather conditions (before they were worn). Ivan is encouraging me to get Dunlops' Rover AT...is that a good choice?

I previously had the Michelin LTX and was disappointed in their off highway performance. Dunlop tires seem to be a good deal, but check out their newest tire, it is called a Radial Rover XT. A little more aggressive than the Rover AT but not as aggressive as the RV I got.

Oooh yes! The RT is a nice tire. Seems they only stock it in certain regions though.
