Hi all - I have finally decided that I would like to increase off roading potential. I am going for a lift, because some of tracks that I go on have tracks off them that I would like to explore - my mates can with lifts, but I am restricted. I think a 2 inch suspension lift with Dobinson springs and shocks (the shocks are double walled deCarbons re-named) would probably be best for me, but I would appreciate some feedback on what that extra inch might get me. I am also considering taking off the sway bars, or at least making them detachable.

The next question is do I do it to my 95 v8 auto or my 2002 DII v8 manual. I love the manual on steep decents, but then again I love the auto's ability to crawl up things. The D11 does not have the CDL lug and thus I am probably limited without spending big bucks on that to convert it. I could spend the bucks and convert it to get the most out of the ETC or I could spend similar dollars and get front and rear ARB air lockers put in the D1 (not much point doing that in the D11 without CDL). I supose I have answered my question to an extent, its hard to go past a vehicle all locked up. I supose I could get rock crawler gears for the transfer int the D1 for good downhill control - but costs are going up for that mod.

I like the D1's current articulation as against the D11. I think the smaller sway bars add a lot to that. Perhaps a 2' lift for the D1 with lockers and keep the bars as they are for now.

Lockers are better than ETC off road, but I am aware of the need to be careful wit their use. ETC on the other hand is reasonably idiot proof.

Any input appreciated.

Sorry for rambling.

Scott

I'd say make the d1 your offroad machine. Couple of reasons.

Its older, and you're likely to beat it up a bit.

Offroad, I think the auto trans is superior than manual, and the downhill braking on low with the auto is acceptable.

There ar huge debates as to which lockers, I say go with Detroit. You don't have to think about it, they turn themselves off when they should.

I run a Detroit in my Disco I. Great, reliable, low maintenance unit. I have pondering the advantages of a selectable unit like ARB. I suspect there were some obstacles that caused minor body damage due to my choice of line up the hillside and the fact that both rear wheels were driven causing the slip. A selectable locker in the open position may have had a different result in that situation.
Or, I suck as an off-roader and should sell my rig and drive a Honda Insight.

From the Spinal Tap documentary/ movie. the band was describing their plans for stage decorations and asked for a stone henge-like set. When they were drawing the plans on a napkin they wrote 24" instead of 24', ending up with 2 foot tall stones as their backdrop. AS far as the 'amps' comment- one of the band members response to a question about something by stating that their amps volume went to 11, instead of the typical 10.
i was trying to add some humour, I am sorry, i won't do it again.

In Australia our humour is differently catered for. We prefer watching people get bogged and have a good laugh whilst slurping beer. The heat gets to us. I used inches because you guys dont know what mms or cms are. I also cant type properyl hence the D11 instead of DII (pedants!)

Thanks for the most informative replies.
