Other than being able to dry clothes after wading around in the bog, what do people put that cabling on their trucks for? :-)

My first thought was strength, but I don't understand how this would help. I'm mechanically challenged...

They are called Limb Risers. They funtion to deflect limbs overhanging on tight trails away from the edges of the windshield or at least lessen impact if any to it.

But as you pointed out, they also funtion very well for drying clothes and are handy as security cables for locking stuff to roof racks.

They also will help the broken branch swing into your windshield, or when they release from the cable, snap back and break your passenger side window...I have a set if you want them...

LOL. I thought they looked kind of ugly, but saw them on some of the Camel Trophy vehicles I think. Was curious.

I agree about the stickers. They are definitely on my list. :-)

Thanks for the info...

Sheldon, I won't say that the situation in Franks post is impossible to recreate, but it's not very likely to take place often. I encourage you to take him up on his offer or make your own, they are an inexpensive and effective addition to your vehicle when on trail - just be sure to pull them off for daily driving.

What is the reason for taking them off for daily driving?

So you don't hit a pedestrian and cut them in half?

Ho:

I KNEW that had to be one of the many uses! LOL

It sounds like a good idea re: the branches and shit. What about some kind of hydraulic arms with a trigger or something that swings the booms out and activates electric chains saws to cut the branches and clear the trail. Then you could yank a kill chord and use a hand crank to reset them.

Most of you have dual batteries to power the saws so there should be no problem. Plus they are nice and quiet.

Of course, one of you handy dudes is sure to figure out a way to spin them over the roof in circles to aid in drying your clothes, and yet another will improve it so I won't need that chopper lift after all - I'll just fly my truck away! :-)

here on the east coast the trails are tight and we have trees and bushes here (not big rock mountians like the west) and not only do they deflect SMALL branches they also lift them up so you can see where you are going which is also kinda' nice.

Exactly, they serve no purpose for daily driving other than pose value.

More importantly, depending on the state in which you reside, driving with limb risers/branch deflectors may cause a cop to give you a ticket for obstructed view. I got one in Colorado for a cracked windshield once. Plus, don't limb risers on a Disco interfere with ones ability to open and raise the hood?

Here's the exchange:
"hello officer - was I speeding?"
"What are those cables (pointing to risers) for?"
"They deflect branches off-road"
"You're not off-road, you just pulled out of the mall parking lot."
"I keep them on all the time because they look cool"
"Uh huh, here's your ticket, have a nice day"
"@#$%!"

Qnother question for the limb risers. I reciently had a custom bull bar made by rovertym and had him weld on tabs for installing the cables. I am in the woods a lot and have the cracked windshield to prove it. I havent given it much thought and just havent put any cables on. I have a 92RRC and havent figured a good quick release for the cable as with a rangie, the cable goes over the hood, and the cable needs to unhook easily to open the hood- susgestions out there?

http://www.discoweb.org/limb/index.htm

That link is what I used to make my limb risers. Using this, you could loosen the tension at the turnbuckle termination, then easily unclip it from the bumper if you still needed too.

P.S. Make sure you get cable that is vinyl coated. You can strip sections off for crimping and such. The coating is important because it keeps my hood from being scratched as I open it, and in case it snaps, the vinyl should minimize damage done by the abrasive steel.

If you want your disco to get noticed, just put the risers on... It seems that my entire neighborhood nows what it is for and I only told one person...Go figure!

Art, why would you open the hood? No need to, Discos are much more reliable than D90 ;-)

How about using some 'Quick-Release Shroud Levers'.....used in sailing on the rigging. Similar to a turnbuckle but you don't turn them.....you lever them!

West Marine catalogue pt no 246175 or 246167. Might be more expensive than turnbuckles.

I'm pretty sure these are what they used on Camel Trophy vehicles.

This dumb cop wants the cables on his disco. And no I'm not fat and don't eat donuts. We just drink lots of mochas and lattes in Oregon.

I had someone ask me if they held the bumper and the roofrack on. My reply, "No..No.., those things are lightning rods," and then drove off. he he
