Does anyone offer a complete kit for Locking Center Differential? I have seen the list on disco2.com for all the parts for the DI Center Diff. Lock but do I have to order all the parts individually? If so from who?

TIA

John

Does anyone know of a independent LR mechanic in south New Jersey that would install the solenoid or D1 linkage? Dealer quoted $800 for labor plus parts. Is it really an 8/9 hr job?

It's a long job, but not necessarily tough. The difficulty is in the details.

Also, you gotta make sure you have the right tools.

8 hours sounds like a safe estimate for the D1 linkage. I would say that 6 hours would be appropriate for the GBR solenoid installation.

I should take that back...

8 hours sounds good for the home mechanic.

For the factory trained Master Tech?

definitely less time spent.

Craig:

I notice in your write-up that the CDL light on your dash illuminates when it is engaged. Is this something you wired up, or does simply engaging the CDL cause the light to come on?

my understanding is that installing the center lock disables the normal traction control....and as the DII is electronically controled, the center lock actually makes it handle worse in most situations except rock climbing??

thoughts? comments?

It's my understanding that if you engage the CDL after the engine has started that you will have both CDL and TC. If you start the engine with the CDL engaged it disables the TC. I might have that wrong, don't remeber where I heard that....

I think the light in the dash cluster comes on automatically from a sensor inside the diff, don't remember reading about having to wire that up.

Jon is correct. Engage and disengage the CDL on Dlls with the engine running and ETC remins functional. If the CDL is engaged and you restart the vehicle, ETC/ABS/Hill Desent will be inoperative. This, however, can be bypassed. See the tech section at Disco@.com The vehicle is wired from the factory for the CDL light, which lights up once the CDL is engaged.

Go for a servo, the physical linkage transmits far too much noise into the cab.

Look at http://www.discoparts.com/ they have complete instructions on fitting the servo. Took me 4 hours Christmas day and can honestly say it made the D2 much better off road

Bill-

In my D2, the CDL light came on when Diff Lock was engaged. No extra wiring necessary.

Jon Button is correct about CDL and ETC in 1999-2002 D2s. 2003-2004 D2s have a different ETC algorithm that takes CDL into account. I do not know if that means that ETC is disabled when Diff Lock is engaged.

Craig,
ETC works with the CDL engaged on the 04 model (I drove one and tried it out). Can't speak to the 03, as it does not come with CDL. Well, the North American 03 models don't. :-(
BTW, that should have been Disco2.com for the how to on the CDL/ETC disengagement.
