I'm wondering if it just needs contacts cleaned,or its a sign the motor on its way out? |

D1 fan speed switches go... I took mine apart and fixed it but it never lasted... The problem seems to be small parts that get loose..and keeping a good contact. The part you most likely need is not sold seperatly you'll need the entire temp control unit if ordering from the dealer..its $300 Canadian. I just scored one online for $30 ... |

I think it might be the switch also but the only way to find out is to swap it out,if that dosent work I'll replace the motor.I knew it was one or the other I'm just in denial(thin wallet syndrome) thanks for all feedback. |

I had the same problem, 97 DI, happened in both heat and A/C. It seems so common it must be a manufacturing defect. The entire switch unit in the center of the dash has to be replaced and this involves removing and refitting almost the whole dashboard. I would caution that this is a fiddly bit of work, so if you aren't up for that a professional LR mechanic might be a good option here. If you do decide to do it yourself, save yourself some stress, and go to a BMW dealer and get the 5 sided radio wrench (looks like a little screwdriver hex wrench only with 5 sides instead of 6). |

is there any downside to just letting it go? mine cuts out every once in a while for a maybe a second, but then comes back on by itself. |

Mine's been cutting out on high for over 4 years now. Just live with it and enjoy your quirky british vehicle! |

Exactly, only on high. just wish it was a problem the volume knob could take care of. Oh well. |

My '94 has been doing the same thing for a couple of years. Just lightly tapping/wiggling the switch a couple of times seems to settle it down until I select another fan speed. Got to the point I would just leave it on 1 & live with it. |

I read somewhere that they are designed to cut out on the 4speed to minimize pull on the engine? That may have only been for A/C though... mine does it too....but doesn't bother me! |
