Most likely :-)

Also - if it is screeching, it is probably just a bearing which could be replaced then giving you a backup alt for cheap.

given that the screech is from only one part of the belts travel suspect Bill's probably right.

Chris - Peter Blatt told me he got an alternator from Napa that carries a lifetime warrantee, and that they have replaced it for him without question once or twice over the years.

Before you replace the alternator, try spraying some WD40 on the belt while its screeching. If it stops, change the belt.

May be worth looking at the tensioner bearing. Can sound like it's coming from the same place.

I've got the Mean Green and haven't been disappointed yet. Not but a few bucks more than the Napa rebuilt crap and you can have yourself a heavy duty alternator that you can not have to worry about replacing it when it goes out in a year.

wd40 is not a belt dressing and would only make it worse if it was a slipping belt.

Napa rebuilt crap

napa has always stood behind there rebuilds, but that dosent help when you are stranded. the napa's here in the midwest have recently changed to a new rebuilder for all there stores and I have allready heard a number of horror stories so I would have to agree to avoid them.

Bill hit it on the head here. the alternator being top mounted and having the heavy tension it sees puts alot of strain on the rear bearing as the bearing goes the alternator main shaft runs out of line causing rapid wear of the brushes.

I just had mine rebuilt from this same excact failure by a very talented rebuilding house. It is working great and I expect every bit as many miles from it as the original time around. plus the rebuild was just over $100. rebuilds are only as good as the company that does them. once you find a realy good rebuilder stick with them and they will save you boochoo bucks!

"but that dosent help when you are stranded."

That was the point I was trying to get across.

Reallistically are you really gonna be stranded by an alternator? I mean its not just gonna pop without warning, as indicated above by all the screaching and the like. Its not like you're heading out to the Serengeti for two months.

yep you bet your ass you can be , and any walk is too long IMHO.

these trucks need alot of power, say a guy has a electric winch(yes Dean this does not include you and me:-)) runs it hard to a stall and then the alernator goes.

you are stranded!...dont say it cant happen this is exactly why I switched from electric winches years ago.

Thom - I'm not saying alternators can't 'go', all I'm saying is the there is usually a fair amount of warning, and you'd be dumb to go on a long trip with such warning signs.

Of course, you could always drive all the way home with a jumper cable stretched across from one rover to another:-)

Napa alternator, was a bunch less than 299. if you know the folks, they might cut you a deal, the 1st one i got lasted for about 1 year, then one day, well, Dead, new one 4 hrs later, 2nd one just started to make a bit of noise from the rear bearing, i didn't like it, but worked fine,, new one anyway, no qs asked,
I seem to fry them with water some how,
Peter.

Chris - Peter goes through so much deep crap and shit I'm surprise ANYTHING still works on his rig. That may play an important part in this.
