An interesting write-up on Estadao.com, http://www.estadao.com.br/autos/noticias/2004/jan/30/25.htm , quotes Land Rover Brazil's commercial director John Peart "... The most significant development for Land Rover Brazil will come, however, from reengineering the Defender, which is curently underway in England with the objective of North American market safety compliance, this market would be suplied by Brazil. "When we get the Defender fitted to the north american safety standards, our production will climb very quickly". ..." So.. was 501 CKD a clever marketing coup, a bit of an interest builder ? How'bout that sweet (Brazilian made) 2.8 TGV turbo-diesel rumored to be slated for the NA Ford Ranger ? Bruno.

Would have been.... but Ford dropped its support for getting that 2.8 through the EPA channels, so, it's not gonna end up in the US in street vehicles, at least that's the latest word. FWIW.... -L

Too bad, so sad... would have made for some advantageous economies of scale. BT |

Ford will do what is being reported about the Bronco - let the Defender die (or fade away into military obscurity) - The Defender will be stollen from England and built in U.S. as a Bronco. Even one of Ford's officers talked about a simple badge swap. However, if it is a true CKD kit that the Brazilians are talking about, they could still do that without complying with all U.S. standards - as far as I understand. |
