Is there anything I can do to prolong the life of my disco. If I let the Disco set for a couple days, when I start it, it rattles and sounds like a diesel until it builds oil pressure. I have a 98 with 90,000 miles. I have been using Land Rover oil filters every 3000 miles with GM goodwrench 10-30 oil. |

Kelly, any specific time this started? It really sounds to me like you are using a filter without a anit drainback valve. The 10-30 oil sounds good for a TN climate. My guess is that you have a defective oil filter. |

It has gradually gotten worse. Around 50K if it sat for 3-4 days I could hear a slight clatter. It sat for 6 days last week and when I started it Saturday it clattered for about 5 seconds which seems like forever with the engine making so much noise. I have always used Land Rover or K&N filters. |

Try Lucas Oil additive. It quieted my valve train right down. It allows the oil to 'stick' so that the lifters and top end still have lubrication after its been sitting all night.

That kind of clatter is nothing to worry about. WIth the weather like it has been in the area this winter it is very normal. 5 seconds is absolutely nothing. If your truck sat for 6 days then every single drop of oil was in the pan. 6 days is quite a while. Jamie is right about the Lucas though...The reason it is so effective is because it is about as thick as tar and would take a couple of years to probably work its way to the pan . |

Will or Jaime, do you think the Lucas additive would work just as well on quieting down the valves? A friend of mine has a 97 disco with 100k miles and two of his valves are knocking a bit. He probably needs a head job, but really can't afford it right now. Will this stuff help that or is there anything else that he can do? Thanks, Norman |

nb It couldn't hurt. There is another thread concerning carbon build-up on valves, and one of the participants was tech. at a dealer. He noticed that the majority of the rigs that needed a valve job were driven by the soccer mom crowd. Lots of short trips. The rigs driven further than just to get groceries and pick up the kids - Dad's car - didn't seem to have nearly the carbon problem. Does your friend drive it short distances? Sounds like a nice long, hi-speed road trip may be in order. |

P.S. Knocking is normally a bearing/piston problem. Pinging or ticking could be valves/valve train. When my rocker arm s#$t the bed, it was a loud tick, like a real bad lifter. It never gets better. The steel insert that contacts the end of the push-rod gets shoved back further into the rocker arm = big clearance = big noise. |

Eric, thanks for the info. I've been wanting to plan a winter trip, I guess now is the time. |

What's your oil pressure light doing when this happens? Have you done an oil pump pressure test? ---Norm |

I have not noticed anything unusal with the oil pressure light. Light goes out as soon as it starts. I'm due for an oil change so I think I will add an additive and not worry about it. Thanks, Kelly |

Jason - I don't want to go into the garage just now, but I think so. It says so on the label. |
