Is anyone out there using a third-party CD changer in their Disco II?

I am interested in a 6-10 disc changer that can handle MP3s (like some of the XPlod Sony models). However, I prefer to not use the FM modulator. Can the stereo in my 04 Disco control any third-party CD changers?

Just bought an Alpine that was supposed to hook straight to the factory harness. Turns out the company I purchased it from sent me a standard changer that used a blitz safe adapter. It's non-mp3, but seems to work fine with the controlls on the steering wheel & head unit. Mines a 99 D2 FWIW.

Bob ... a few questions. First off, the unit I have is the base "S" model in-dash single CD player. Is this unit an Alpine.

If so, will any Alpine changer work? ANd, when you hooked up your setup, what was involved? Just bolting it down and plugging it in? Was the harness under the seat all you needed? Or did you have to run wires and what not?

I heard that you can get an after market plug in for the single disk changer that will give you rca jacks to plug in an mp3 player like Ipod or such. Much much better than after market disk player IMHO.

http://woodcompanyusa.com/comersus/store/comersus_viewItem.asp?idProduct=1090

i need to call them to verify the disco player will work...there are other companies that make this sort of adapter but I cant find a disco link specifically. Once I get around to it I will see whats what. For now, Im using a cassette adapter.

That would be cool — and make buying an iPod more justified. How hard is it to get the back of the radio?

If the 04 DII has an alpine head unit, does anyone know if this changer would bolt up and be operated by the stereo itself?

Mike,
As I said, mine's a 99, but if your head unit supports a changer it should work. Here's the site I orderd it from, http://www.autotoys.com
It's an Alpine CHM-S630, had to remove the head unit, run the cable & bolt the changer to the factory mounts. All told took ~ 1 1/2 hrs.
Look in the tech section for a better description of the install.

Bob,

I have been doing some research and I think I would be fine with an Alpine changer. I am partial to the MP3 capable one and found it at AutoToys as you recommended ( http://store.autotoys.com/cgi-bin/wfp53024.storefront/401ef4650052ccae27454200c1 480642/Product/View/ALPINECHA634).

But, on Disco Web, there was mention of using BlitzSafe adapter. Know anything about those? Will I have to use one?

Also, were you happy with AutoToys? I am always skeptical when buying electronics.

As I stated above, the unit I ordered was SUPPOSED to plug into the factory harness, making it a 10 min install. The unit they sent me used a blitz safe adapter that plugged into the back of the head unit & I had to run the cable supplied w/ the changer to the pass seat. The install was a PITA, but it seems to work fine, the controls seem a little slow (disk/track skip ect.). The most frustrating part was getting the head unit out, & finding room in the dash for the adapter.

Bob,

That link does not work for me. Takes me to some generic security site.

Blitzsafe works more or less fine, however it appears to have either a power or more likely a timing issue, which is that if you are inclined to leave your radio and changer powered up all the time, then when you go through a reboot cycle (accessory power comes on, starter motor on, power brownout, done) the adapter fails to initialise correctly and/or talks to the radio incorrectly or too early. The audio remains muted by the radio. Turning off and on the radio fixes the problem.

It’s my understanding that if you’re going to use an aftermarket changer you will have to use the adapter. The units are Alpine but the changer with LR stamped on it was $700 and the one from Circuit City was $275.

I used the aftermarket changer in our ’00 and as Bob said it is a PITA although it would be much less so if the adapter were made to install between the cable and the changer. Getting the adapter to fit behind the headunit in the dash was my biggest problem.

Here is another silly question. To see if my 04 G4 Disco is pre-wired, what am I looking for??? I looked under the passenger seat. Had no clue what I was looking for. I saw one white wire clip (with 4 wires). But, this was not very long and it was all the back towards the seat joint.

The factory data cable on mine has a black plug ~ 1 sq inch in size. It's located close to the front of the seat near the mount for the changer.

I bought a changer that had the same model number on it as what would be on an original LR. The plug fit, but it didn't work in the truck. Took it to the local punk car radio shop, worked fine in three different hookups, but not in my car. Don't know if it was just the wiring in my car, but I do know that the ones that work with LR, say Land Rover on the front.

And are you telling me that an '04 doesn't have a CD player!!!!????

Its under the Accesseries -> DiscoII, you have to look for it.

No, the 04's have a 1-disc CD player in them. I was hoping to add a changer to make life a little easier and to gain the ability to play MP3 encoded discs. But, $575 for a changer that alpine sells for $275 just doesn;t seem right.

My suggestion would be to just replace the headunit with one capable of playing Mp3s with rca inputs. An mp3 formatted disk will hold almost as much music as a 6 disk changer with no need to get under the seat. Plus you have the option of adding an iPod or something similar as someone earlier suggested.

I have a Pioneer that has worked very well so far. You can burn your disk with the music stored in folders and the seek time is low. Plus almost no skips so far and I drive a lot of gravel roads.
