I've got the dreaded "whooshing" sound when I unscrew the gas cap on my '95 D1 for weekly fill ups. Any thoughts on what part of the fuel system I should check first?

Thanks!

You're releasing pressure that built up while driving. Nothing to fear...the fuel system is pressurized, after all.

Yeah... I thought that was COMPLETELY normal. Every time I've filled up since I got my car, I've had that sound.

Every car I've ever owned has made that sound.

I don't think it's anything to worry about unless your ECU is throwing a code.

Yea I hear it all the time. On all my previous vehicles too. I assumed it was normal.

Wow that's news to me! So all you guys and gals whoosh too!? None of my other cars do this--only an Alfa 164 I used to own made the same sound.

FWIW it only happens after about a week of driving and refueling. When we take long trips and the tank is refilled regularly it doesn't whoosh.

my '97 disco did it often and '89 RR does it. maybe it has something to do with letting my tank get really low before i refill.

whooosh is the sound of my lazyness.

I'd have to agree with Rob the whooshing on my 95 D1 has always been there ... but it definately is worse if I have a full tank and let it run real real low... like the lights been on for 20k ...thats pretty lazy. So i'd have to agree laziness might have something to do with wooshing... but i'm just an expert in laziness not whooshing...

Too bad Seinfeld isn't on anymore. They could do a whole episode based on this thread.

"Kramer, did you hear that?"

"Yeah, that was one great whoosh!"

For me, the Whooshing was a bad thing. For your consideration: A strange tale...A while back I was having a problem with my 96. It was cutting off whilst driving. Afterwards would crank but not start. If left for a day or so, it would start right up. I had all kinds of weird thoughts as to why this was happening and thought it might be the fuel pump as there was no pressure at the fuel rail. I was also at ~115K miles and figure the pump was probably going to die soon anyway. Decided to call Nathan to buy a fuel pump. He mentioned that he'd been driving his 96 with a loose gas cap because his tank was not venting properly, tricking the pressure regulator into thinking that the fuel pump did not need to run: already adequate fuel pressure. Sure enough, when the problem came up again, I "burped" the cap, and was back on the road. I haven't traced back to what actual component is causing the ventilation problem but I've been fault free since July by driving around with my loose gas cap. Believe it or not !

We sure have interesting ways of describing things.

Both my D1 and DII have the whooooshing sounds. I have been disturbed by it. Now I put in ear plugs before exiting the car at the service station and I can say that I have had no more troubling episodes. Just remember to take them out otherwise the interior is so quiet that you could close your eyes and be driving a Toyota Camry.

The whoosh is always good for a laugh or two depending on who's on the other side of the gas pump island...

The whoosh is actually a sucking sound and it means the fuel tank venting is plugged. As you use gas from the tank, air is required to replace the gas to keep the tank from collapsing (but not likely to happen). If air is not provided, a vaccum is created inside the tank. The greater amount of fuel used, the larger the vaccum. Not a good thing if you have a weak fuel pump (as it has to work harder to overcome the negitive atmosphere the vaccum created), but not a bad thing either. A some point you should clear out the vent hose to the gas tank. It should be part of your basic maintenance after wheeling, especially in sand, dirt, and mud (let's see-that leaves snow and water). For me here in the sand pit, it's a regular post check item.

Curious, when I get a whoosh from my Disco, it is definetly air coming out, not getting sucked in.
Also, I am odds on the issue of a loose gas cap fixing a no start. The pressure regulator has no direct control of whether or not the fuel pump runs. It is a vacuum operated device that controls fuel pressure- approx 40 psi when the engine is off(no vacuum) and 32ish when the engine is running.
So, in the gas cap theory,if it's a hot day causing the fuel to expand, the engine should just stop running?
Also, I didn't think any fuel lines, vapor or pressure went directly to atmosphere. That would be against the whole Clean Air concept, I think.
Than again, what do I know?

I also had a problem with gas fume buildup in the gas tank. It got so bad that the fuel pump would continue running (even after the ignition was turned off). Always opening the gas cap and venting resulted in the fuel pump to turn off. This is after turning off the disco, removing the keys, locking, walking away from the truck, hearing the whine of the fuel pump, then unlocking gas cap door and removing gas cap.

I tried replacing the the fuel pump (no help), the charcoal canister (no help), and the gas cap (no help). I finally followed the hose from the charcoal canister (the only place where the gas tank can vent) back to the filler spout. There was check valve that worked great for allowing air in from the charcoal canister to the gas tank, but didn't allow very much flow to the canister for venting the gas tank.

I removed the check valve, turned it around, and haven't had any problems with extra pressure (or low pressure) in my gas tank since.

Yeah, mine is air escaping too. without a doubt.

the folds with air rushing in are probably trhe ones with issues.

happens more in the summer and with a low tank, or more room for vapor.

Wow. I don't know what to say now.. When I opened my cap, pressure was certainly being relieved. Sounds like pressure build up causes fuel pump to run in Jim's case, but caused mine to shut down? I got to the point where it would cut out at highway speeds and leave me sitting on the roadside unable to start. Ever since driving with the loose cap, no probs. Maybe was just a coincidence. I do miss the whoosh, though..

Wow this thread has gotten strange... I'm almost positive mine is a vacum but I'll have to check next time to be sure...
So if I got things right some of us whoosh in and some whoosh out and some don't whoosh at all??
Maybe some of these check valves were installed backwards and some not at all?

My check valve was installed correctly (arrow pointing to engine was indeed pointed at the engine). But I find it works better installed backwards.

I'll have to wait for the summer and 120F heat with a low tank to see if it really fixed the problem. Or more accurately, I'll see if it successfully masks the fume buildup symptom of (probably) some other problem.
