Ok. Here is the deal. My Disco won't start sometimes unless I hold the petal to the metal. Then it starts like a charm. I took it to a dealer and they told me that the Fuel Rail was rusted out. Another guy told me that it is impossible for the fuel rail to be rusted. I would hate to have to buy new Fuel Injectors because they are like $600 bucks. Do I need to replace the Fuel Injector Regulator, Fuel Injectors, Fuel Rail? What is going on? All help appreciated for my 1997 Disco.

The fuel rail in my '90 will be replaced, its too corroded for my liking. I doubt Land Rover changed the spec for how it was to be made.
If the dealer said your rail is rusted, it's probably rusted. Change it and see what happens. Next step is to get the injectors cleaned, it's not that much; ought to be <$50.
If your injectors are toast -
You can get a set of new injectors for $188 (e-bay price) or the website $228 price from these guys:www.fiveomotorsport.com

click Range Rover / or call them. I believe they will clean your injectors if need be.

Does the Fuel Injector Regulator need to be replaced along with the Fuel Rail? what are you planning to do?

I had to replace three of my injectors since they were leaking, I did see a lot of rust on the rail but mainly it was the leaky injectors that were giving me the same problem your describing. Some people recomed to get them cleaned, I just bought new ones from DAP-inc at $68 bucks each. If you want to try to do it yourself let me know I can tell you how to do it, its not hard just a long process but it saved me a lot of money!!!!

Thanks Tony and Eric. Do you think that I need to replace the Fuel Rail too, or could I get away with just replacing the Fuel Injectors? Also, the price on DAP show $119 per injector. . . What is that all about? Thanks again.

Also, how did you know which ones were leaking?

Tony what's the link to the injectors for $68. I went to DAP-incs site and the d1 injectors are listed at $119.95.

I have heard quite few people say that rust had ruined some of their injectors on a D1. Which would mean that tiny particle had scratched or lodged in the injector nozzle.

If your engine has high mileage, you may want to replace the fuel rail and regulator as long as you're in there. I wouldn't think that tiny particles could damage the pressure regulator. However the spring inside of the regulator can get weaker over the years, and that will lower the pressure in the fuel rail.

Also the injectors could last for decades if they get cleaned at a Bosch service centerevery (110K or so). It would be shame to drop them in the trash just because a few went bad. Send your old ones to me if you don't want them.

The fuel rail in the RRC and D1 are different. But I think that they are really interchageable. The differences are minor.

I hear Kyle comming now:-)

I agree with all of this, very often rust particles do hang up on the "dish" in the nose of the injector, this causes it to leak down after shutting down.

when you hold the gas pedal to the floor you lean out the motor till it starts.

you can pull all the injectors and fuel rail and then set them up shooting into a old valve cover, turn on the key and the rail will come up to pressure. the dirty leaking injector will begin to leak. either clean or replace the bad ones.

dont try to start the motor!!! you will have a mess!!!

Jason-
Why pay $119/injector when you can pay $28.5 for the same thing? Go here: www.fiveomotorsport.com

Sam

I will replace my fuel rail and pressure regulator as they are about 14 years old. In parts years, they have entered into the realm of geezerdom, and will be quietly retired.

Sam I apologize, I just checked DAP and saw them at the same price as your seeing them. I bought mine just four months ago and I guess they've jacked up their price. As far as checking them follow Thom's instructions turn the key on but don't start the car, you will immediately see the injectors that are leaking. Once you pull one of them out you will notice the amount of corrosion you have in your rail. I didn't change my rail or cleaned it for that matter, after I changed the three leaky injectors my car started right up just like it did when I bought it. I didn't look into getting the injectors cleaned because I was so sick of my start up problem, I still have my old injectos and have been meaning to send them out to get them cleaned that way if the problem ever arises again I will have these old-cleaned out injectors to put back in my car.
