Okay guys, I have searched on this, but I haven't been able to find decisive results. For those of you who have replaced your head unit with an aftermarket one, what did you use? I would like makes and specific models if possible so I can find the right units. For some guidance, all I want to do is replace the head unit, and still implement the stock speakers, amp, and subs in the door. Basically, I don't need better sound, I just want an in-dash unit, as I no longer have a changer and my head unit is screwed up. Also, if anyone knows why my head unit no longer has any power, that would help. The fuses are ok, the connections are fine; it just won't work. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I know this isnt what you are looking for, but this is what I put in my Disco.
DVD2

I really like it because I can play DVDs, CDs, MP3 CD's, etc. Also, once I get my navigation system, I will be able to run the Navi through the head unit.

Adam. It sounds like your amp is blown. If you want, email me with your number and I'll be more than happy to discuss it with you. danieldkim69@hotmail.com

I didn't install it myself, I just paid my audio guy to do it. I was going to do it myself, but they said it was very difficult. I think that installing the actual head unit isnt too hard, but there is a seperate "brain" that must be mounted behind the dash. It took them about 3-4 hours to install it.

Adam, you'll need a deck that has at least one pair of line-level outputs (pre-outs). I had an old-school Clarion 7770 CD deck (4 channel outs)- it had no built-in amplifier. I soldered some RCAs to a VW harness and just hooked it up. Check the archives for detailed instructions.

I replaced mine with an Alpine CVA-1003, may not be what your wanting, because it requires having a cd-changer as the head unit is just a tuner. But I went with it, because I also installed a number of other componets that feed into it. However installation was fairly standard.

Yeah Stuart, I really want my CD player in-dash. I hated always reaching under the passenger seat to change them.

What year / model of the VW harness needs to be used for the Disco 1 head unit replacement? I'd like to do what Wei said and use the line outputs and the factory amps. Where can I find the wiring diagram for the VW harness? This is a Pioneer deck in the Disco 1.

Thanks.

Brad, have a look a this article:

../17/3248.html>

The VW harness is by Metra (part number 70-1784). Any car stereo install shop should be able to provide that or cross reference it. I don't know which year or what type VW it was originally meant for. Hope all this will help you out.

I just replaced my head unit with an alpine 9815 with a kole amplifier for the subs and a crossfire amp for the front and rears. rear speakers are crossfire 4.5 and fronts are rockford fosgate 4.5. I added a ssi neo 80gig mp3 player to it instead of a cd changer. you could try to use the stock amps and speakers, but they will sound like SH*t and there will be a whine from the stock amp, even with filters. I removed all of the stock amps and speaker , after trying to use the stock amp. if you feel daring you can look at the amp for the "sub" which is in the door the amp is screwed on to the back speaker, pice of junk. once you start , you will wind up replacing all components, if you really want a good sound

Adam, I got a Sony MP3 with wireless remote and a Kenwood WOOX subwoofer. Works really well and is pretty cheap. 10 hrs on one CD is awesome. It advances by album and by track. The WOOX is because you lose sub and dash controls with aftermket head unit.

Adam, I got the Sony CDX MP40. Got it from 6th Ave Electronics in NJ for $134. To this you will need to buy the VW harness you read about if its the first aftermarket for that LR.

You lose the dash pod controls but the Sony has credit card remote that's as or more convenient (IMO). Had to add the subwoofer as the LR was too complicated for me to wire. Also it comes with a wired remote and a bunch of adjustment. I don't change it much so I velcroed the wired remote to the side panel where the WOOx is.

I've tried to post digi pics but can't get the image small enough. email direct if you want a look.

Rover-on!
