Lately my 95 "chirps" at around 650 rpm as soon as I reach 750 rpm it stops, espically when creeping along without your foot on the gas(like pulling into a parking spot). It moves along smoothly. It's coming from the engine compartment. Has anyone had this before, I am planning to look at the vaccum lines, belt tensonor and alternator this weekend.

Sounds like a bearing possibly tension pulley
maybe water pump.get a mechanics stethoscope
or a long screwdiver and listen to where noise is
coming from.good luck

On my 98 Disco it was the hub seal. Disco was lifted and the front drivers wheel was turned by hand and the famous "chirp" sound appeared. After further investigating the hub seal was installed improperly. I suspected the waterpump at first, but the chirp would only appear at low rpm and when I would turn to the right.

check the clutch fan. It sounds like it happens at idle rpm. With vehicle not running see if the fan wobbles by hand. I just replaced it in mine. Damn thing sounded like i had birds under the hood.

Thank for the input everyone. Since it "chirps" at idle rpm even when parked I'll go after the pullies and the clutch fan. One other thing that I noticed was that the "chirping" is associated with a drop in the engine idle speed (like something is putting a load on the engine), it happens after the engine is at operating temprature which really has me thinking that it's the fan clutch. I'll let you know when I find the problem.

I found the noise, it is from the water pump, it is more of a low squeal than a chirp and it occurs between 650 and 700 rpm. After 700 it's quiet as a mouse. There is no leaking and the water temp is always below the midrange. Has anyone else experienced this, and is this a precusor to a failure of the water pump or just an annoying squeal. One more question, in other waterpumps that I have had fail there is a weeper (small hole) on the underside of the pump when those leak it is time to replace the pump. Do land rover pumps have a weeper?

yes the water pumps have weep holes, and yes i had the same problem with the water pump on my 97 D1. "chirp" at idle below 700 rpm. mine starting making the noise with 67k on the odometer. I did not take the pump apart to find the failure. it sounded more like a dry outer seal squeaking as it rotated, rather than a faulty bearing. but when the seals go the bearings soon follow suit. sooooooooo nothing to think about. put a pump on.

'97 D1 - 58K miles, same chirp sound. Just below idle, as engaging clutch or when turning off engine. It was the water pump. Could feel and hear the marginal bearing after removal. Replaced the tensioner at same time.

According to the mechanic I work with at an independant LR Shop this particular model waterpump "sings", no matter what they are on, he had one on a Porsche he tried shooting WD40 in the weephole, putting treatment in the coolant, there was no effect. I'll take your advise replace the waterpump, fan clutch, tensioner and belt at the same time. My D1 has 83,000 miles.
