Greets: I am new to LR world. I bought a 2003 SD7 about 2 months ago and am interested in upgrading the wheels to 18" from the OEM 16". I would like to get suggestions on what I am going to need to change on truck to accommodate the bigger wheels and tires. I don't plan to do alot of off-roading yet - I still need this disco to get to work everyday. Any ideas on 18" wheels and tires?

Thanks

If you stick with stock tire sizes no change is necessary

You'll just need wheels and tires - nothing else. 18's frequently pop up on the for sale board because lots of folks "upgrade" to the 16" for off-road purposes.

Check back and you'll probably find some.

Are 16's more useful than 18's for off-roading?

Yes. More tire selections and more sidewall to conform to the rocks, terrain, etc. Also, the taller tire sidewall will absorb more of the impact from obstacles and protect your wheels.

Thanks Greg. Sounds like I don't want to make any changes if I plan on Off Roading in the future. Hmm then I wonder why the SE and HSE models have the 18" wheels?

I am trying to do as much reading and research as possible. This web site and boards have been really helpful.

Yep Bob is right. 99% of these never see a dirt trail. The 18" wheels offer better handling on the road and have a better street look. I saw a Range Rover at the dealership toady with at least 20" wheels.

My daughters are friends with a girl whose mom was very snobbish towards my wife and I for a couple of years. This all ended when I picked up my Discovery. Suddenly she was our best friend and very talkative. I took her daughter out with my daughters off-roading one day. When we returned the mother was shocked that I took my Land Rover off-road. I explaned to her that that was what they were designed for. She then revealed that she used to own a Range Rover (shocker) that she would garage whenever it snowed. It made want to vomit then reach out of my window and strangle her. These people (the majority I might add) are the reason that Ford is now stearing LR in the wrong direction.

Thanks for the Rant.

I have the 18" rims on my 2003 DII SE and it's hard to find good/reasonable priced tires for them for offroad. The stock Wrangler HP's are horrible in the mud. I do love the onroad handling of the 18" rims so I'm keeping them.

I am still waiting on my 285/65R18 BFG AT/KO's to come in. Much better tire, but a little bigger than I wanted to go. I may eventually get a second set of 16" rims with offroad tires.

Overall, if I had the 16" rims, I would stick with them.
