I have a '98 Discovery with 106,000 miles that has a severe case of the wobbles after hitting a bump at highway speeds. It's enough to make me want to pull over as I'm convinced a wheel is going to fall off. However, it smoothes out when I slow down by 5 or 10 mph. My mechanic has checked the all the usual items, replaced a tie rod end and the steering dampener, but the steering shake is still there. Any help and suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks in advance.

Check your wheel bearings by jacking the truck up one side at a time. See if there is any movement. At 107k I would say you are due for a change anyway. IF the wheels are good then you may need to adjust your preload by removing some shims.

Adam, I had the same problem and did the obvious...repacked the wheel bearings and adjusted preload. Niether fixed it. Turns out it was my front shocks. Both were shot. |

same EXACT situation. I had removed my steering dampner during suspension lift (those things never did anything, IMO, except for this truck!) I put it back on and never had it happen again! |

There are a lot of things that hold the front end together. When you have the wobble check the: 1. Panhard rod bushings 2. Radius arm bushings 3. Drag link and tie rod ends 4. Wheel bearings 5. Swivel pin preload Any of these can cause the front end to wobble after hitting a bump. |

Thanks for everyone's help. I'm going to start off with checking the wheel bearings and changing the shocks as they look to be the original set, then progress from there. |

In the Jeepers world they call that "Death Wobble". When I had my Grand Cherokee w/4.5" lift I got it also. For Jeeps it is alignment, panhard bar bushings, radius arm bushing, bad steering stabilizer, shocks, wheel toe, tire balance. I would check those. On the Jeep after a few months with the lift I found a loose bolt on a control arm that blew out a bushing and caused the "DW". HTH |
