I ordered my 3" OME lift kit from John, and am wanting to get my BFG MTR's lined up. I want the biggest tire I can get on there. John told me to stick with 265s, but I'm curious if anyone else is running 285's. Part of me wants to heed the wisdom of someone who knows. The other part of me wants to push things a bit and try an go that 1" larger. We're really only talking about 1/2" closer to the fenders right?

I thought I'd see if anyone else is running them on a Disco II. Mine is a 2000 model and will also have a RTE front bumper and winch. The kit has heavy duty springs.

Thanks.

It's not just a clearance issue for turning or stuff. It's also the weight of the tire. Besides the effects on braking and power to the ground, you will also be putting more stress on the drivetrain with the extra weight of the tire. Stock D2 diffs are weak and the axles/CVs are not much better.

Sheldon, I went from 265's to 285's. It makes a big difference. Gearings, braking, stress on the drivetrain. They all become factors when stepping up to 285's.

Greg you have owned about every single tires size for rovers haven't you? I am interested, how many sets of different size tires have you bought?

I've been thinking about the same thing, and haven't heard much talk about it. Greg says they are "factors", but so was going to 235/85s!
I know a lot of other trucks run them without re-gearing, my wife's FJ80 for example, which is totally stock.
I think if you can live with it being slower, be aware on the trails, be willing to sacrifice some turning radius, I think it would be OK?
My uncertain 2 cents.

I am running 285's. Its a bit slower without regearing but they fit fine. So far no broken axles, but new ones are on on the way anyways.

I just installed 285/75/16 super swampers on my d1. It also has a 3 inch lift. although trimming was required on the fenders, quarter panels and sliders. The biggest problem driving is that the turning radias was reduced dramaticaly. spacers in the front would probally cure the problem.

So Greg, I am assuming you are suggesting I stay with 265's or are you saying 285's fit without trimming as long as I think about beefing up the axles and changing the gears?? Also, are you selling the rear bumpers for Disco IIs? If so, how much?

Greg and Rick: How much does it cost to change out everything to fit 285s and what's involved? I am assuming that these enhancements are good ideas anyway, or are they just necessitated by going with bigger tires? IOW, Is it a big PITA just to get that extra 1"?

Thanks!

I've got a 2001 with the EE 3" lift and 265/75 tires. I'm just running Yokohoma Geolander A/T's (which are considerably lighter than thost BFG M/T's you're talking about) and it's still a good amount of weight and size difference from stock.

For that matter, lead is lighter than BFG M/T's.

Bottom line, the 285's would be great but I wouldn't put that much weight on the end of the axel without first making an investment in gears, axels and diffs all the way around.

"I know a lot of other trucks run them without re-gearing, my wife's FJ80 for example, which is totally stock."

Your wife's FJ80 (if it's a 93-97 it's technically an FZJ80) came stock with 275/70/16 tires. It also has much stronger 4.11 gears in the differentials, fairly strong 30 spline axles, and cv joints (birfields) about 1.5 times as big as a Disco's.

I'm running 285/75 YOKO MT..BUT...I have changed EVERYTHING in the drivetrain except for the front axles, those are stock and that's the only thing I've broke since putting on the big meats...Here's the list:
TT"S front and rear
4.11 gears from GRB
HD rear axle's from GRB
Custom built Rear Driveshaft, with UJ instead of roto-flex
Custom built front drive shaft with Spice double cardon and UJ...also has custon t-case flange... I just broke 40k on this set-up...

Frank.

That's a sweet looking rig you've got there. Since I'm not very mechanical, I think I will stick with 265's for now if I can find them. I tried to find some today and the 265 BFG MT's are listed as pending deletion instead of active. AT TA's are back ordered everywhere and I can't get any. There are nearly 700,000 people in my city and I can't buy these tires dammit.

Is this situation the same down there? Is BFG doing some kind of upgrade to the MT's (a la the KO's) and so are pruging the system of old stock right now? Tune in next week, same time, same place....

Seriously, I will try to find the MT's, sipe them, and stick with my existing mods for now. I ordered my RTE bumper, sliders, diff guards and skids today. I need to get my winch on its way too. The lift kit is enroute from EE and needs to be installed, and I hope to get my Hannibal rack and lighthforce lights by the time I get back from Vegas on the 15th. I think I'll have my hands full for a while. :-)

Thanks everyone for your help.

I know what you mean about BFG. I ordered the AT/KO's last week (285/65R18) and was told it would be at least 2 weeks.

Sheldon, if I had it to do all over again, I'd (gasp!), probably stop at the 265 size. Any larger than that and you start making compromises if it's a daily driver.

This coming from someone with 36.5" tires on a daily driver! What the hell was I thinking???

And yes, I sell the rear bumpers. E-mail me if you want some info.

Greg.

This in fact will be a daily driver at least in the winter. In the summer I will be driving my beach rig - a BMW Z3. :-)

I am definietly interested in the rear bumper.

I will be in Vegas all next week but will try and follow up on this when I get back.

Thanks!

Oh, I forgot to list my tires to date (all within the last 24 mos):

Stock
265 Futura M/T's
285 Yoko Geolander AT's
9.00x16 Michelin XL's (chickened out-too big)
9x34 Swamper bias ply
35x10.50 Swamper SSR's
9.00x16 Michelin XZL's (I know, but I had trimmed for the 35's so I went ahead and tried them)

Currently in the market for some 315/75-16's for daily/snow/sand driving. The XZL's are killing me on the street.

Is that it Greg? I thought you had more. Hmm. I personally think you should go back down to the stock size tire for the street :-)...

HAHA, that would be funny looking.

BTW do you have a new picture of yours with the XZLs??

Sheldon,

Here's a good deal on some 285 MTR's:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&category=33745&ite m=2458208737&sspagename=STRK%3AMEBWA%3AIT

Of course, I find this AFTER I already ordered some 285 BFG MT's...and I highly recommend the Greg Davis rear bumper. :-)

Greg.

THAT is defintely the look I am after. The MTR's are only good for a little over a year on the highway with the miles I put on before the trad is almost done (at least on my Ford it was like that), so i suppose I can swap them or sell them later. Is your a disco II? Need more info!

I found the 265 BFG MT's so i ordered 5 today. They won't be here for about 10 days though.

Thanks guys!

First, where did you find the 265 BFG's, Sheldon?

Second, my rig WILL one day look like yours, Greg. That is seriously bad ass.

I just need to find a wealthy relative to kill. Hmmmmmm.......

I found them at Costco of all places. They aren't the ATs though, they are out of them and have over 40 customers prepaid and the tires on back order. Mine are the Mud Terrains and were apparently found out of a Vancouver warehouse and are being brought in for me. Since you're probably in the states, I'm afraid I'm probably no help.

And I agree. If you look up bad ass in the dictionary, you will see a picture of Greg's truck.

Frank did you just make tiny siping cuts or wide cuts? How deep did you go? I mainly want mine siped for the snow and ice. I was also planning on only doing the center lugs and leaving the shoulder lugs intact.

does anyone know how much the turning radius is affected if i fit 245/75-16 on a OME med. duty suspension disco? What do i need to adjust in order to fit and drive the truck comfortably?

i'm runnin ( for now ) bfg 245-75-16, the turning radius is ok. it was never great to start with but i can't say it's gotten any worse. I can still make u-turns at traffic lights on 4 lane (total) streets. Spacers fix the problem but require lots of trimming.

Cheers

Sheldon,

With a 3" lift, you've probably made the better choice w/the 265's. I ended up with about 4.5" lift on my 2000 DII to be able to avoid rubbing (w/o any trimming) with 285 MTR's. I haven't made any changes to the drivetrain as of yet and have been fortunate so far. There is definitely a difference in performance, but it's liveable as a daily driver.

Hey, hey. Watch it there Aaron.

Guys, have another vehicle lined up for a daily driver if you follow my path. And remember, fitting those tires didn't come easy.

We're talking extended radius arms, custom lower spring perches, trimmed fenders, and trimmed and welded rear doors. Plus HD steering components, HD axles, and new gears.

Oh, forgot to mention. 10 mpg too.

I gotta start saving for that Mini Cooper.
