How do the faseners work for the black trim on the A-pillar. I need to remove them to run wires to the rack.

I don't have java-black trim but I have removed the A-pillar trim before. I just pulled the trim straight away from its attachment points. Apply even pulling force, use both hands, and pull towards the opposite A-pillar. I did not break any clips in this manner.

correct. brute force and ignorance wins the day again. You will either remove the plastic fastener from the metal clip, or will remove both from the hole where the metal clip seats. Either way, it can stand to have this done a good number of times before it become loose. I have removed mine at least ten times without it becoming loose.
