hey everyone...ive been enjoying my newly purchased 96 se7...i noticed that in the back that one side of the inside paneling is like a foot thicker than the other side....also the thicker side has a dual paned window on the roof...and the other side is a normal single pane...why is that? Is there something stowed behind the jump seat or something or what? Thanks!

Adam,

Are you talking about the driver's side? Do you have rear-A/C?

ahh...so its because of the ac ducts back there eh? but why double pane the window? especially using a cheap clear plastic for the inside ....its all fogged over! blech! would that be very hard to remove you think? the plastic window that is.

I can't say.... I don't like the way the rear A/C ends up making the window small.... even though you don't look out of that window from the driver's seat, it just isn't asthetically pleasing. And, in both of the Disco's I've had, with only the front A/C, it was still capable of getting the inside chilly, even in the warmest weather here.

Anyway, I've never closely examined the A/C setup, as far as being plastic, etc. I'll pay attention the next time one is in the shop, and see what it looks like.....

Adam:

The dual-paned window creates the air channel from the rear A/C condensor and blower to the vents in the overhead unit. If you look at the configuration of the rear compartment, there really is not an elegant way to do this. Now the plastic window is a bit much especially as it ages, but I would suspect that it is plastic because of weight, durability and cost.

I was planning to remove the window in order to tint the smaller window and it looked to be more trouble than it was worth to remove.

Mine is all fogged up, well kind of.
The fogged look is from AC blowing through there and leaving a nice layer of dust...
I tried to take it apart to clean out all the dust, but it gets kind of hard (on mine at least)
There were actually 3 panes, the normal glass and 2 plastic ones acting as the air duct.
The first plastic one is easy to take off, just have to remove some molding.
The second one is where you'll have trouble. Its riveted in at some hard to reach angles...
I herd though that it is pretty easy to take the glass off from the outside.
I know nothing about how those windows seal gasket things work, so one of these days I’m going to take it to a shop and have them pull off the glass so I can clean it up.

My dogs absolutely love the rear A/C. I just ignore the dirty window because the cool air makes them feel so much more comfortable during the warmer months. Also, because of the doggie cage, they can't put their heads out the window. It's the least I could do for them.
