The service engine light is on the red light. Is this light a emissions reminder or something else.

Service Engine Light(RED) = Stop the car, something is seriously wrong

Check Engine Light (ORANGE) = Just some faulty sensor

if for a DI, what Glenn says is incorrect. Service Engine Light (Red) = emission service reminder, don't worry about it, reset as Danno gave you the link (or under the seat if 94/95)
Check Engine Light (Amber/orange) = fault code stored, might be something wrong with truck, read code and find out issue.

now, on a DII, both check engine and service engine lights have been combined into one Service Engine Light (i am pretty sure, don't have exp with DII, just what I read here. think the color might be red?) Fault stored, read code, find problem.

Just depends on what truck you have.

Oh wow....I was always led to believe that (by the dealer I think). I stand corrected then...You learn something new everyday I guess.

On my '00 DII, the amber Service Engine Soon came on @ 54K miles. Any ideas? I am still waiting for my OBD2 tool. TIA.

Phil - (D2) you can undo the battery for a few seconds to reset that light.

Dean,

Thanks! Will the throttle body need adaptation afterwards i.e. idle position, etc.? In some cars with Bosch electronics it has to be done electronically once the battery is disconnected. Actually it adapts itself after about 10 - 15 minutes of running. Reminds me of my old car with a racing camshaft.

Nope. It may have to re-learn something, I dunno. Clock and temp settings will be reset though.

I agree a watchdog interval alert (based on time or mileage) is probably built-in for emissions system's to alert one that the specified interval between its servicing has elapsed.

Perhaps its another separate interval alert of time or mileage interval elapsed between standard maintenance cycles. I thought I saw you said you have 54k miles on your Disco sII. Maybe it was reset at last maintenance service.

On the link below, I posted all of the Disco sII Bentley manual's Service Engine Soon (SES) lamp illumination causes that i could find:

2000 DII -

My dealer - atlanta - said that light would come on at 52K as an emmisions reminder - mine is at 53k and still no light.

He really didn't explain why but said it would cost me $300. For what i have no idea but would like to know if I can simply reset myself.

Do we really have to take it to the dealer just to simply reset this or do they actually have to do something?

Just an update on my '00 DII @ 54K, the SES (amber) turned itself off again and this happened at 52K also. Real crazy IMO.

I just hope nothing needs to be done before the next major service. If it is emissions related, I would like to completely redo the exhaust system and change the cats / resonator / muffler to freer flowing one. Any ideas?
