The auto transmission in my DI won't upshift from 2nd to 3rd until about 6000 rpm. Dunno if it will shift to 4th. The kickdown cable is fine and adjusted properly. It started doing this suddenly with no prior warnings or problems. I have an extended warranty, so it is at the dealer. The warranty Co. will buy a new valve body, but the dealer can't guaranty that it IS the valve body, and wants me to pay the difference for a new transmission. I looked at it, and it seems the kickdown cam has no tension on it to make it shift. I didn't (couldn't) see the spring, but the tech subsequently said it was okay. Two questions; What do you all think? Should I just replace the valve body or could it be something else? Or, secondly, should I pay the $1,000 difference the dealer quoted and opt for the new transmission? I have about 72,000 miles on the Disco, and don't plan on selling. I don't want to spend the grand if I don't have to. What do you think?

Many thanks,
Alan Stuart

First off I would drop the pan and see whats up in there. If there is no sign of clutch I would then check the TV for correct operation. May very well be the governor valve as well. It takes a very small amount of debris to stick either one of those things amd cause the symptom you are experiencing. Ofcourse if there is some clutch in the pan you will know what to do from there.....
The truck is looking good Alan....

If it ends up not being the valve body, and the transmission gets worse, will they then cover the transmission? If so, I would wait it out...although $1000 is not much for a new transmission.

Kyle, thanks.

Pan is off and all is clean. No sign of debris anywhere, oil is clean as is the filter. Excuse the ignorance...what is the TV?

If you have the pan down now then ignore my email. Take the governor assembly out of it if you can get to it and remove the TV and clean them both with very very fine sand paper.Make sure they slide in their bores with no resistance or sticking at all. Any small bur or debris will cause them to stick and do what you got going on. Also check the torque on all the valve body bolts...

I think that is the problem. I may have to pay another visit to the dealer, but I think that is what is not operating properly. I couldn't tell for sure though...I wasn't there when the tech removed the T body. But if I understand correctly, the throttle valve gets replaced with the body...(?)

The warranty Co. will go for the new transmission if replacing the valve body didn't immediately help. It just happens that the warranty expired a couple of days ago (just squeaked this in), so if in a couple of months the same symptoms show up, I eat it.

The governor portion is a seperate item.. The TV does come with the new unit... Its not really a huge deal to service either one of them...Just needs to be very clean..

I think what I might do is opt for the new transmission--installed for $1,000, if I can get the old one back (I don't think the warranty company will want it), fix what ever is wrong with it, then sell it on D-web :-)

Thanks for your help.

Okay, sorry to drag this on. Just found out the "new" transmission means rebuilt, and there is a core which means I can't have my old one back. Since I've never been very far into an automatic tansmission, I don't really know if the rebuilt ones will be as good as genuine new. So now I'm back to square one--"factory" rebuilt for $1,000 installed, or relpace valve body at no charge covered by warranty company. Opinions anyone? 72,000 miles on my Disco.
