Or more appropriately what can I do off road? I have a 03 Disco 2 with no CDL (at this time), and I want to know what I can do off road with out the fear of getting stuck. I just want to do some minor off roading in the woods, and I want to be able to drive it on the beautiful beaches of NW Florida. Can I do this with a stock rig? What suggestions can you give me before trying this? As an aside what years of the Disco 2 have a transfer case w/ CDL that is compatible with the 2003?

Once again thanks from some one who could kick him self for getting a 03.

I've got an '03 and love it. I took it through some pretty rough stuff stock so I wouldn't worry much about "minor offroading in the woods". The beach is another story as it depends alot on your tires. If you have the Wrangler HP's like I do for now, air them down and you should be fine. I've only gotten stuck in the mud with these tires, at no fault to the Disco at all. When none of the tires have traction nothing will help.

I think you'll be impressed with the offroad ability of your "stock" Disco 2. Its ready for the trails and the beach. The traction control on series 2's will stop spinning wheels and transfer torque to wheels with "grip". It will not allow one wheel to spin out of control while your other wheels are on the ground.
As for the Disco series one, Once your cross axel'd (one wheel spinning on each axel). Your stuck! Some new A/T or M/T tires will help your truck, but you'll be fine. Have fun!!

get a front skid plate. this will protect your front steering arm from bending or breaking. but yes the truck is capible in stock form. take it easy as it is not a race. get some recovery gear asap. you should be carrying a least some form of a hand winch, recovery stap, to loop aroung trees. this is important if you offroad alone. or with out another truck around.

Mike,

I bought an '03 Disco too. I wish I had waited for the '04, but the downside of waiting is that I wouldn't have enjoyed a Disco for the last six months. Life is to short to always wait for the best vehicle. There will always be something better. Besides, I talked to Bill at Great Basin Rovers and he plans on making a kit to retrofit the '03 with CDL. This will be a lot cheaper than buying a new transfer case. Anyway, CDL is my next modification. Back to your question. The stock Disco is awesome. Even our '03 without CDL. I am real impressed with the traction control system. It's NEVER left me stuck, but there were some things I couldn't climb that I think I would have been able to climb had I had lockers. Traction Control isn't perfect, but it's pretty impressive. Anyway, all the posts have given some good advice. I'd add that it never hurts to have another vehicle as your wing man just in case. So find a buddy to bring his vehicle to off-road with you. And, preferably, it will be another Disco ;-)
