This is taken from the Technical discussion board:

I rarely get a wave here in Myrtle Beach, either. What is up with that?
I always wave. Usually I get nothing.
Every once in a while I will see one with some mods like mine.
They wave.
I guess there are 2 classes of Rover owners...the "Wavers" and "Others"

I prefer the wavers.

You might be a "Waver" if...

...You always have mud on your Rover. Even the day after you wash it.

...You spend more money on things for your Rover that you will probably never use than most other people spend on their vehicles

...You drive fast to be home before your wife, because if she sees ONE MORE UPS package she will FREAK!

...You narrowly avoid rear-ending the car in front of you whenever you drive because you are too busy looking in the other lane for Rovers

...Every little corner of your home has some sort of Rover toy or memorabelia.

...You spend hours in the Wal-Mart toy section looking for something that might be a Rover

...You know the price of every piece of aftermarket equipment made for Rovers, and where to get it the cheapest.

...You go into great detail explaining what you are planning on adding to your rover to anyone whe casually remarks about any part of it. Example: In a parking lot, a 10 year old says, "Nice Truck, Mister" to which you reply, "Thanks. I am getting ready to add a snorkle to it after I modify the rear bumper to fit the next set of tires that are going on it whenever my NATO wheels arrive..."

...You have every Land Rover websight on your favorites list and spend WAY too much time on line talking about your rover than actually using it.

...You can't wait to get to work so you can go on line and look at pictures of other people's rovers

...You don't understand why someone would own a Rover and never take it off road.

...You know every "Short cut" near your house.

...You know what is on the other side of every "Dead End" sign in your town

...When driving, you look into the water runoff ditches along the side of the road and think, "I know I could make it through that!"

...When you drive through a construction sight, you see the bull dozers in the dirt and think to yourself, "Lucky Bastards"

...You have at least one friend that owns a Jeep who gives you a hard time about your "Wanna-Be Jeep" until he needs to be pulled out.

...You have stickers on your Rover that don't say, "Soccer Mom"

...Your kids ask you to pick them up from school instead of mom, but won't say why.

...You don't understand how the mud could possibly get "There"

...You see another Rover on the road and adjust your speed accordingly so you can drive beside it.

Feel free to add more.
This should be on the General discussion board, but I'm not going to re-type it. I have to get some work done today!

Greg, I've gotta print this out and show my wife that I'm not the only one that's afflicted to this degree. Maybe it will give her some comfort in knowing that I'm not alone out there. Some of that shit hits VERY close to home. Good stuff.

Please Please Please send those words of inspiration to all you know...they are words to live by. I think you forgot one though.

P.S. Paul you'll like this one after seeing that piece of shit eat sand on the beach.

You're a waver if...
...If you see a spanky clean RED Freeloader and against your better judgement you wave anyway while thinking "It's good to have 4Lo"

No smibs!

Hey now Jason,

I am trying to change my ways and be nice to everyone. I think the gold freelander would have made it out okay if it were not for those low profile street tires.

Paul,
Ok, if it makes you feel better to blame it on Michelin then so be it but I didn't see a single disco get stuck and there were plenty with stock XCL's. Oh BTW I just read the "dogs" thread for the first time in a week and to sum it up I think we are making some great aquaintances for the Solaros trip...lol

well here in California the sac area all there is is disco owning soccer moms there is one disco in my town that has a arb bullbar and that is it and has never been dirty and you see mine and it has just the stock bumper with a rovers north skidplate and the rear bumper is all bent from taking to many hits and I have the side plastic piece held on by screws that I drilled threw the plastic and has never been clean long enough to even take a picture. If I got one wave I would be happy I get people looking at me like what in the world is he doing to that thing. Also since I am pretty young they look at me like I am garbage.

LOL

Waving: Lots of Rovers where I live, but mostly 'non waver' types. There is hope however, about 3 weeks ago I pulled up next to a D1, and by the time I turned to look & wave, he was already waving like crazy. I heartily waved back. Big joyous grin on both our faces. I was in shock. Usually if I wave, I get either a quizical look, leer, or ignored.

In fact, around here, there are so many Rovers, (without a clue, but look promising, hehehe) that I have been thinking of purchasing some more Dweb stickers, and putting them under some windsheild wipers ... (hopefully, this board won't suddenly get inundated with a bunch of constipated snobs, LOL)

Am I that ugly? LOL.

Well,

I am were I live, Charlotte, is the SUV capital of the world. There are a lot of SUVs here, and many a Land Rover. I have only had one Land Rover driver wave back at me (Greg Davis). Everyone else just stares :). The Jeep guys (the REAL jeeps guys) don't mind waving, and they stare too. I guess I'm a waver :):).

One more you might be a waver if...

Your 8 year old daughter says something like, "OOohhhh...MMMMmaaaaaaaannn! Look at that D-90, Dad!" whenever she sees one, and is actually excited about seeing it. Unlike the wife, who casually says, "That's nice dear" but doesn't even look up from whatever she is reading.

Guess I'm raising a future Waver.

In good ole' Amarillo, TX there are tons of Land Rover Disco's. I'd say that 98% of them are soccer mom cars. They drive them because it's a "Range Rover," and it has leather and wood. Besides my Disco, there are two modified ones that I see. One of them waves, but the other thinks that i'm a crazy mo fo. The one that does wave is cool, I met him a year ago. I don't think he surfs the D-web, but next time I see him, I'll tell him about our community. But all the D-90 guys in town wave at me. Even some jeepers wave at me!

Hahaha, that list is great and soo true..

And Max, I waved at your series the other day... then I realized it was in a parking lot!

Funny thing is ALL the Jeepers here in Charlotte wave to me...

And there is a guy in town with a moded Disco here in town who DOES NOT wave, so if he's reading this WAVE DAMMIT!

BTW - any of the Charlotte rovers know of the cutie in the 110?

I find myself fitting into alot of those above...(just change the rover in some of those to G-Wagen) I wave to all cool cars, whether I know them or not... and I get a helluva alot of people waving & honking at me :) I don't know if it's me or the car... lol (probably both ;)

Jon,

What color was that D110? Blue? I know of a Tdi 300 blue one that was imported (or built up or something). It is in the rich part of Charlotte and it is driven by a little rich boy who is rather stuck up.

Series in the parking lot!! Yea, everyone loves that thing, even the teachers like it. One was even interested in buying it!! Of course, he couldn't even drive stick :). You will probably never see that truck in that parking lot again b/c I moved into the Senior lot b/c they left. It is a better parking area.

Jon, I am trying to get some people to go 4 wheeling up at Uhwarrie this weekend (Sat). Interested? Greg, wanna come? I have yet to test out the rig off road, and it REALLY needs it!! BTW, I just installed a new winch so getting stuck won't be a problem :).

As for being a waver if:

...Your childrens night time story comes out of the parts catalog..."

Max T.
Broke, cause' that winch was expensive!!!

No wavers in Houston (unless it's a one-fingered wave)! Actually, I didn't even know what a modified Disco looked like until I saw one on eBay last night...up for auction by a LR dealer in Utah.

Greg, that's some read there!

My favorite:

...You drive fast to be home before your wife, because if she sees ONE MORE UPS package she will FREAK!

Now, here's a tricky one:
...Your kids ask you to pick them up from school instead of mom, but won't say why.

my kids do, but they know and say why, and disco (my wife's ride) comes dead last in "seen in" list of preferences. jeep comes first :) (esp. 'cause I can't afford to drive it more than a few days a year)

Greg,

Love the "You Might Be A Rover Owner If ..." ... Have to admit, I was a little embarrassed because I'm the female of the family, and fit too many of those. hehehe, I'm speaking up because of the "Your 8 year old daughter says something like, "OOohhhh...MMMMmaaaaaaaannn! Look at that D-90, Dad!" whenever she sees one, and is actually excited about seeing it" ...

My son now identifies each make, and yells out every type of Rover he sees on the road (to me). This afternoon, he was watching "Crocodile Hunter", and he yelled out to me, "Mom! There's a Land Rover, one of the older ones, those series!" LOL

Mary, :) Go to the photo gallery section on the board

Everytime I wave at other rovers, they either give me a strange look or they don't turn their heads. Maybe that's because most of the ones I see on the freeway are stock rovers.

Some of my friends in other types of vehicles say that they can spot my Disco a mile away on the freeway and they'd speed up to catch up to me to wave.

I get more waves from jeepers than LR owners. We have to many snobby A$$ LR owners in midwest anyway to get any waves.

At least the Jeep crowd appreciates tricked out rigs.
Cheers to all fellow wheelers

Yeah...Come to think of it, I get a lot of the Jeepers waving at me, too.
More Jeepers than Rovers.

You can usually tell if they are wavers or not.
My daughter and I take bets on if they will wave or not.

I think it is the non-wavers that give us the "Mall SUV/Soccer Mom" stereotype.

Until we go on the trail with them...

I actually had my Jeeper buddy pull me out the other day. The worst part is that his Jeep and an FJ-40 made it through with no problems. Mine was just too darn big to fit. Both bumpers on the ground and driving wheels all up in the air.

It sucked, but at least I'm out there trying!
Had to "Take one for the team"

Thought of one more:
You might be a waver if...

...You have a picture of your truck...IN your truck!

No wavers here in Michigan either...... Since F*rd bought LR, everyone in and around Dearborn now has a RR, Disco or Freelander on lease. They don't have a clue what they've got, it's just another different vehicle to everyone else.

Most of them don't even recognize another Rover! It's really sad to visit the dealer to shoot the breeze and then realize that LR is just another commodity purchase for 90% of buyers!!

right andy! i drive up to the fenton area twice a year with my wife and i hardly see any. of course not much in fenton but haven't seen many around flint either. if there are any they must be in the dearborn area and if they are leasers they aren't waiving.

Mary, were you the one asking about 6 mo. ago which dealship in Housotn to buy from? If so which did you end up getting the Truck from. My wife and I live in Sugar Land and wave to other Disco's, they look at us like we have a third eye or something and Lord knows there are plenty of Discos out on the SW side of H-Town. Mostly, stock rigs though.

Hi, Scott. Not me...didn't find out about this bb until after I bought. Unfortunately, I fall/fell into the category of being a buyer who viewed the Disco as just another vehicle...oops! Was looking at ML320's and RX300's, because I wanted to clutter my driveway with an AWD and my mechanic told me to get a Land Rover. I bought it from Team Autoplex on Chimney Rock and SW Fwy...lease return from Florida. Neither dealership had anything at the time that interested me. I'm all stock, although I don't know where folks take their 4WD's around here anyhow!

Hundreds of Discos in San Francisco - I mean every fifth car in the Financial Dist. is a D1 or D2. None, and I mean none of them are wavers. All stockers driving to their Peets' Coffee-Cornell-Yale-Princeton-.gone-Marina-Condo-Snob-Pads or Ikea or Magazine for some more high-end knotty pine laminated expanded metal furniture. Even worse are the HSE drivers who look at me like I'm some dirtbag (only slightly) in my lower-class modified D1.

First waver I've seen is Craig K. of NCRC - we almost ran each other off the road in joy of finding another waver with a D'Web sticker on!

Craig, are we doing the Hollister thing this Monday? Can Sam Shirley come out and play?

Cheers,

I was up in NJ (Livingston) a couple of weeks ago, never saw so many frickin' discos, all stock. Of course, I was in an ultra-subcompact who-knows-what and I waved at all of them. None waved back, it took me a while to figure out why.

Some people just don't get it.
They should make people sign a waiver saying that they will take their Rover off road at least once while they own it. It seems like such a waste.

It IS nice, though, when you find another waver. It is like looking in the bottom of a cereal box to find the last prize of a "Collect all 5" series, when you have about 11 of the other 4.

What the Hell am I talking about?

Oh, never mind. I was trying to say something profound, but it didn't work for me. I'm just glad you other wavers are there, is what I was trying to say.

Hi, my name is Bill, and I'm a wave-aholic. I've tried going cold turkey, but I just can't help myself. When I see another Land Rover, any Land Rover, I just have to wave. Most people ignore me. A few kindly souls will give a weak smile. On rare occasions, some saintly person will actually respond with a word or a "secret jesture". I know, I shouldn't be waving, I should have strength to resist the temptation of demon-wave. But, I just can't resist. Do you understand? So, if any of you happen to be passing through the Kansas City area and you see a broken down old fa*t driving a white stock (yes, stock) Discovery I, and he happens to be waving at you like a mad hatter, please be kind to me and wave back. Let me know I'm not the only wave-aholic on the road. Maybe we can even help each other out of this terrible affliction.

I have been a waver since 95, and back then there obviously not as many on the road, so it was easy. I once had a young woman take the waving to the extreme - she came up behind me in the left lane blowing her horn and waving like a maniac! Pretty funny, and her Disco was scratched and muddy...

My wife and I own two of the four Discos in town, and the others won't wave to us. I insist on waving to them EVERY time I see them, hoping they'll get the point, but they don't...

Wave on,

Returning from Assateague a few weeks back in my Series lla 'Clasic' I got waves from three different discos . Two wanted to buy my truck and the other followed me into a gas station and asked what year my Scout was ??????? That's the second time a disco owner/operator called my 'Clasic' machine a Scout . There should be a handout followed by a quiz given to all new owners at the Rover centers. Some times ya just have to ask why........

Eric is right on. I live 45 minutes south of SF in Silicon Valley and its pretty bad. Nobody waves, nobody. My fiancee loves watching me do the wave and get no reply but as she now picks Rovers out while I am looking the other way, I'll keep her. Bonus points for the coveted D-90. So, if someone sees a stock avalon blue D1 in campbell with a EVANS & HALSHAW Tire Cover (a LR dealer in Solihull), pls wave. Please?

like sanfran, seattle is overfilled with its share of disco's and rr's. but the ones that really gripe me are . . .

the guys driving series trucks around on AT's who don't wave back, because they just had to have a cool beyond cool "vehicle" to drive once a month, and decided that a new freelander was too expensive for their downtown rave-all-night lifestyle, and most of the time they don't even know that a RR or Disco is a Land Rover . . .. UGGHHH! that is *the* worst!!

okay - i'm better now

I live near Princeton, NJ and there are so many Rovers but I never get any waves in my D1. I give them out sometimes but the soccer moms dont care and just stare straight ahead in their Rangies. There is one guy in my town with a black D1 with Hellas, Rack and we always exchange waves. When I am in the D90 I find that alot more give me waves. I always wave back

Evan. they waved because of the HUGE rainbow sticker on your truck. the pink bandanas are usually a dead give away. you might want to take that off. might confuse some people. i know it is pretty and all, but next time at SCC you might get the "sneaky uncle" from Paul. :)

YO Daddy-o - if you wave back(!) and don't assume that i'm in some kind of modified Bronco then you coo by me ;)

and don't worry, my rig is easy to spot as I quite likely have the only stock green RRC in seattle with mud on it LOL

i admit that there have been a few 109's give me a double take after seeing liberal doeses of mud on the panels and missing end-caps . . . in seattle, spying a RR usually means seeing a non-offroad type person. (did i mention we're very PC around here? LOL)

I'll admit it, I'm not a LR waver. I am a off-roader waver. Beat up J**ps, scratched trucks (in Augusta, GA there are a lot of trucks that see the dirt, yeha) and expecially older (60 series and older) Toyota Land Cruisers (my first true love is my '73 40 series), get big waves. When they notice the disfigured appearance of my Disco they usually give a wave back. Having never seen another LR that looks like it has seen worse than a dirt road in town I've given up on LR's as automatic waves. Since my wife is one of those who have a Disco that has only been off road once (I made her go.), I am well aware that most LR owners find the waving creepy because they are just driving another car, not anything special about it so "why are you waving at me?". Now the young girl in the pristine yellow D-90 gets a glare, out of pity for the D-90 and plain old envy.

Way too many of those statements hit too close to home. We have several large "wetland" areas near my house that I always want to swerve into.

I've spent the last two years living near Seattle and my wife and I were amazed at how many Rovers there were in the area and how few waved back to us. After two years of being ignored I had finally started to give up. If you are a wave-aholic, Seattle is the place to cure your problem. I say, "NO MORE". I have been re-invigorated. With God as my witness, I swear to continue waving at every last one of them until they wave back or I successfully force all of the lousy Cappuccino Swilling NON-Wavers to find another route home so that they can avoid me. (No offense intended for all of you local Cappuccino Swilling Wavers. You just keep swilling and waving.) Enjoy the long weekend and wave if you see me driving down the coast to California this weekend.

I took my family to Mustang Island (in Texas) a few weekends back and saw an identical disco--white series one. the only difference was that they had a roof rack full of surf boards. Not only did the driver wave; he fashed his lights. I thought my wife was going have a fit because I was so excited to have someone wave.

As a side note--if the driver of that discovery sees this note, I want to go surfing!

Funny I was in Moab a few weeks ago and saw two other modified disco's. I waved like mad and so did they. I live in Salt Lake City and never meet a waver till then. My wife thought I was crazy but I was happy because I meet a waver. Its a disco thing, non-wavers wouldn't understand.

Yep, you guessed right if you said the rangie.

Westlake Village, CA - I saw a girl in a brand new G-wagon today that must of saw me first and waved with great enthusiasm. And I wasn't even in my Disco. She must of saw my LR cap and my camera ready to fire. So I returned the wave also. Also saw a yellow Disco (XD, after reviewing my digital photos today) with what I believe are the genuine LR brush bar; the center grills painted in yellow by the owner probably. Maybe one of you know him? The person didn't wave back, but maybe that's because I happened to be a passenger in a sedan instead of my Disco.

I've said this before in a different thread, I bought my disco in july '99 and it is now '02, I have yet to be waved at here in the SF Bay Area. Just the other day on my way home, I saw a lifted white disco sI, mud tires, roof rack, lights etc., I flashed my lights at him but he totally ignored me, he was coming from the opposite direction and turned left in front of me so he should've seen me. Oh well, another good reason to get out of the SF Bay Area...

I was driving last night in N. Atlanta and saw 4 or 5 rovers and waved at all of them, one waved back, another disco. I think he was just doing it to get me to stop.
Anyways, I asked my wife if she waves when she drives it and she said "only to defenders (because they're cool) and to old rangies."
She may not be driving it much anymore!

As for me, I'll wave at all of them, so wave back, damnit.

Wes-

Sounds like you saw Ed Hsu... Where did you see that lifted white Disco?

If you ever see a muddy Blenheim Silver Disco 2 in and around the East Bay, you're sure to run into a waver, 'cause that Disco 2 would belong to me!

I spent part of the weekend in Walnut Creek, and I was surprised that 75% of the Disco drivers waved!

for the most part i must say i get a more positive responses from J*&P drivers than i have ever had from fellow LR drivers. i dont get it, i guess it goes to more soccer folks than NASCAR people drive LRs. i say this because the few times i went to the local LR dealer the sales guy all got wood and were crawling all over my disco and in all honesty it has had much done to it (YET) giving me the impression that the softer, kinder types buy the Discos than any other. thats ok tho, the smiles and thumbs up i get from the JEEP people makes up very well for the lack of enthusiasm expressed by LR owners about their rides. we are the minority among LR owners. we chose to lift, grind, weld and fit as many mods as i merger wallets allow and in doing so we alter Disco's apperance to the point that it is no longer the soccer car that those ice cap drinkers love to profile in. which really works out great for us, in that it is cheaper to buy and find one. well thats my two cents on this.

Wes, I always try to make eye contact as well. If I don't make eye contact, then it is obvious that they're not interested in other Discos, and not worth the effort.

My GF can pick 'em out in a crowd now. She told me about what must have been an Orange Trek Disco in the hills above El Cerrito

I was surprised at the wavers in Walnut Creek as well... I would think that those Discos are mostly mall crawlers, but I could always be wrong, I suppose

I have started a collection of photos with me posing with other Discos. It's like posing with celebrities. My gf doesn't understand...

None of the 4 Discos were modified, but I got a friendly wave nonetheless!

Needless to say I was very surprised and this thread was the first thing that popped into my mind.

I also had to defend the Bay Area... :)

You might be a waver if . . .

1. You compare your ride height with everything that passes by . . . and IF it is higher- you declare it a mall crawler.

2. You take pride in the amount of scratches you have.

3. Buying a new accessory is a NEED and not a WANT.

I really appreciate the waves I get in my community, though I'm sure that the red light, siren and volunteer fire department equipment I have are what is drawing the majority of the waves. Funny that Mary and Jon were parked side by side at the same place. Yesterday David and I were doing a short antiquing prowl locally and we pulled up next to a Disco just like ours, down to the exact color. Now, in my cow town that is a serious convergence of the stars or something, Discos down here are few and far between. The other Disco had a "country" sticker that said "BB" (the kind that designates a country, like "GB"), and I just couldn't figure it...until I read the fine print. Bethany Beach! Now, that struck me as cheating, but whatever. Anyway, the really funny part was watching the other folks leave before we did, and all four of them walked around our Disco inspecting it like they'd never seen one! I mean, I realize I drive the BEST Disco, but really people, you gotta act cooler than that, LOL!

I love the "you might be a waver if..." My work colleagues all laughed at me for having Rover models in my office until I actually BOUGHT one and now can be proud of my ownership. I am still stock though and might look like a 'mall crawler' or soccer mom (no kids yet thank god!) b/c I'm female and young...but definitely an obsessed Rover owner! I actually got waved at today, a guy in a Disco waved at me before I could get off my own. Pretty surprising, but at least somebody understands when you buy a Rover you're also buying into a community.

As for Garrett getting picked on, well, I think it's because it's so much fun, what with the porn stars, Olsen Twins, etc. And fortunately, being a scholar and a gentleman (I think I was the first to append that one on him), he's got enough humor not to get pissed off. Of course, it could be that he wears his white letters on the outside of his tires; and I have to come clean, been in the closet too long, I wear my tires that way too.

BTW, GP, you'll be saddened to hear Isaac Newton's in Newtown was seriously damaged by fire and will be closed for the forseeale future.
