Have any of you had a Land Rover stolen or heard of someone with a Land Rover stolen? Most kids are after Honda Accords, Civics, and other "rice-rockets", and LR although pricy aren't high profile rigs to them.

My friend has an Accord, and it was stolen last night, it was installed with a LoJack, and she got it back 30 minutes later, minus 1300 dollars in damage to the steering column. Interestingly enough, it wasn't that far away. Police say that most people who steal cars - take them and park them a short distance away, if no one comes back to recover it (i.e. no lojack) then they can take it and do as they please. Interestingly enough, it had an alarm system that they bypassed. She's happy she got her car back, and the insurance is happy that they're only paying 1300 in damage.

I guess, with the Disco its old-school GPS, all I would have to do is follow the oil drip... But seriously, I've put a lot of work into the Disco, and was wondering wheter its worth having a lojack installed. But before I consider it, I was just curious to know if this is a problem with Land Rover rigs.

http://www.carsdirect.com/safety_products_brochure/lojack_intro

"LoJack costs $695.00"

so what would the cost be on a steeringcolumn for a Land Rover/Range Rover ?

as a side note.. there a has been a spike in Freelander wheel theft as apparently the bolt pattern and offset is identical to a honda type-r suspension. They havent been stealing the whole Freelander, as even for free, nobody wants them :-).. but watch out for the 17" wheels, especially the spares.

I have lo-jack in both discoverys as well as our other vehicles. They are very desirable, especialy one that sticks out like a sore thumb with muchos $$ in mods, and parking in SanFrancisco was never the safest thing in the world. I think it's well worth it.

Cheers

Porter,

I did a check at the dealer where the previous owner of my Disco had his work done. It turns out my '98 was stolen when it was a year old and recovered. It spent one and a half months in the body shop.

There are a couple of products that are more effective than LoJack. I have heard that because the LoJack requires so many people to track down the vehicle (doesn't use GPS), many police departments are loath to use it.

You could try one of the GPS-based solutions like the one at:

Or you could just leave your cell phone hidden somewhere inside it :-)

When locked, is it easy to bypass the imobilization lock on the Disco then? The alarm she had on was an aftermarket one that they figured through. How hard is it to figure out the factory one on the disco's.
