Probably going to have a good laugh at this, but what are cats.

I live quite aways away from a shop that can work on my LR should I be concerned?

I'm not convinced about the going bad bit...if only cos this is the first time I've heard it....have you switched to a differnt brand of gas?

I think I am using the same gas, I go to the same gas station.

Do think I should bring it into a shop?

I 2nd the gas theory. If the tank you got last has a little more sulfur in the formulation, that would cause the stink. Just ride it out & see what happens.

Well working for a Land Rover Dealer.I have to agree with the cats being bad. As for the links that John forwaded that pretty much tells it as it is.
If you are under 80k miles they will be under emissions warranty. Probably not trans fluid but it won't hurt to check.

Automatic Transmission Fluid (ATF) going bad I agree makes an odd stench as well. If when checking the ATF per the owner's manual, it isn't the good rosy pink color but instead brown [that I believe indicates varnish in the fluid], it will not have the semi-sweet smell that good fluid does either, it will smell like its burned in a foul way.

Check for leaks in the exhaust line CATS, Muffler, Exhaust Pipe, I had a leak on my main muffler and I was able to see smoke coming out of a small hole on the bottom of the unit and it stunk like a big fart!!!!If you have a small leak get some repair sealant and fix it yourself, I fixed mine and it's been good for a couple of years now.

it's typically not the cats
yes the smell comes from the cats but this is due to a rich mixture problem. that cats are performing as they should but due to an increased fuel to air ratio hydrogen sulfide is create.
TBOW, one of the members here runs or works in an exhaust shop, perhaps he'll chime in and offer you additional help with the topic.
i would check fuel mixtures first and not replace cats

My 98 has always done this, but with no real pattern. I've always layed it to the gas as it only smells that way at startup. I've changed suppliers and havn't noticed it as much.

Back in the 70s/80s when cats became required, this was a sign that they were going bad, but as I said I tend to think it is gas or mixture problems with newer ones.

Is the smell inside or outside of the vehicle? I have an nasty smell but only get it when I open the door. And there are no leftovers under the seat!

i think i might have the answer here or at least clues to the answer. I think the rotten egg smell is like someone above said, is due to a too rich fuel mixture. I emailed the poster, anna and suggested they do a search in the archives, as i know have read a lot of posts similar to this. Anna told me via email that the check engine light has been coming on and has been throwing the coolant sensor malfunction code. the mechaninc that pulled the code said it was fine and not to worry. doesn't sound like that was good advice to me. that coupled with the fact that anna said that sometimes it doesnt want to start and when it does big clouds of black smoke come out. so am i on the right track here with thinking that the coolant sensor is bad or at least intermitant and the disco is staying in start up mode because the coolant sensor never tells the computer that the engine is warmed up, thus it runs on a rich fuel mixture which makes its way to the exhaust system causing the rotten egg small and the black smoke.

how does that sound to everyone?

sounds good to me......that where i would start, also check the MAF and the intake (ambient) air sensor, these also aid the ECU in determining the proper temp. and yes if it (CTS) does not communicate with the ECU properly, a rich fuel curve would be the result and it would stink like rotten eggs...... again not being the cats.

Wow!

Thanks for all your help. You guys really know your stuff. At least now, when I go see the mechanic I will understand a bit more and hopefully will not be taken advantage of.

Thanks again

anna
