I just got back from the car show and was plesantly surpised to see the standing of Discovery against the other 4x4's out there. First, you should know that while I love going to the show every year, this year we were actually shopping for a medium to small SUV for my mom. She has always liked the Disco, and is very jealous of mine. So, obviously, that is one of the choices. Others to look at were the XC-90, Acura, Lexus GX, Toyota Highlander, VW Toureg, etc. I personally liked the look of the Lexus, but didn't know anything about it. One of the criteria is a 7th row seating config, for the grandkids...

Anyway, right away we started with the Landrovers, I like the new look of the Freelander. The Volvo was in the same price range, and had a good layout on the dash and the seating was nice. Even a good bit of usable cargo with the rear seats up!

The GX was pretty much out of the price range when we saw that it started at $50k and was impossible to get into the back seats. (I figure if I can get in it, then a kid can be happy in it.)

In the end we narrowed it down to the Volvo, and the Discovery - Discovery having the best 3rd row seating of any mid, or even large SUV - especially if you count that they fold up so nice etc... But what caught our eye on the way out was the Honda Pilot. Nice size, OK styling, flat panel GPS - DVD in back, leather seating and a panel and comfort level of the Freelander and the Volvo - probably the only Japanese SUV that had a European feel to it. Honda quality is very good too. All that starting in the $30's, I think I remember right!!

Anyway, if any of your moms are looking for an SUV those are my picks. (With the Disco 1st of course.)

And no, for those who are paying attention, I didn't think it approprate to take more incriminating photos of the H2 - although I was still surprised by the fact that I could walk right up to the H1 and google at it all I wanted, but the H2 next to it was a swarm of people who couldn't get enough out of the fact that the mirrors fold AT THE TOUCH OF A BUTTON!!

My mirrors fold in without touching any button. They seem to simply know--when they touch bark, they fold in. They also fold back out by voice command--"Dude, fold my mirror back out."

I heard the H2 has 157 new buttons this year! and 237 more small electronic parts! and I still think its the ugliest most useless thing on the road! ....i just had to let it out!

The new Volvo's looks sweet!

Did you happen to catch a glimpse of the new Land Rover car thing? or what ever its called?

I've always liked the look of the XC90's. For what they are, I think they're one of the better looking SUV's out there and from what I heard, they're one of the better all around SUV's.

RB, you've got a good list there, but did you look at the Sequoia?

Sequoia is probably a great truck, but too big for what my mom wants. The Disco is definately the largest she would get - that is part of why it has the best back seats. Also, Toyota still has some work to do to get the interiors of their trucks up to date with the price tag they put on those things. The Honda and the Land Rover are much more comfortable and easy to look at -- the instrument panels are much better.

HA! you think they are going to bring the Range Stormer to Portland? Someone would loose their job if they did that! In fact, last year was the first year I can remember that they actually brought show cars from LR to the show. Usually they just drive a couple of the Rovers off the dealer lot two blocks away. One of the Discos did have a Portland product on it, a full sized and fitted cargo net for the adventure rack.

My father-in-law has the Honda Pilot and you can't go wrong with the Pilot if you want reliability, fuel economy (for an all wheel-drive vehicle of its size) and value for the dollar. It drives like a car and has tons of room in it. The all-wheel drive, torque on demand system is nice for slick streets and the third row seating folds neatly away.

Its a nice SUV for the money. I would have her drive the Disco, Pilot and Volvo. I dont think she could wrong with any of those cars but the Honda will probably last the longest and have the highest resale value.

That is exactly what we are thinking Brett, those are the top three.

The cargo net is like bungie cords so it instantly fits to diffent loads. They had two one-man kayaks and a duffle bag up there and the entire load was perfectly covered. It had clip hooks fitted for the bars of the Safety Devices rack. Anything "heavy" would need to be actually tied, this is for "soft" items, but it would make a tiedown project really easy and fast.

They are made (or sold at least) at Rack Attack in downtown Portland.

What was the posted gas mileage on the Volvo. I heard that was the biggest consumer complaint after taking them home. Didn't they read the mileage sticker before they bought.

It think it was about the same as any - the Disco was 13-18 or so, the rest were 14-21/22 or so.

I've read some reviews of the XC90 getting as low as 10 mpg on city driving. That's kind of scary if that's true for such a new vehicle.
