I am looking for some inexpensive software that I can use with my Garmin ETrex GPS handheld. Also, will all handhelds work with all software as long as they have the data cable option?

Thanks

Microsoft Streets and Trips. about $30 should work as long as the GPS can hook up to the laptop

The Garmin Mapsource runs on the computer and will track with your GPS, just have to have the data cable hooked up. Most newer laptops don't have a serial data cable input so you will probably have to get a usb adapter if your data cable is serial.

Joseph,

You're right in that Mapsource is Garmin's GPS interface software, and actually, you can download the latest version directly from Garmin's website (http://www.garmin.com/support/download_details.jsp?id=209).

But when you purchase it, you don't purchase just Mapsource; you either purchase Garmin's "US Topo" which is the topographic dataset, or you purchase City Navigator, or Roads and Recreation; each different data set is what you're buying, and includes Mapsource. You'll notice that the verison on the CD with the data is usually not the most up-to-date version, which is why the newer version is posted on their site.

DeLorme's software is reasonably priced, and also likable. If you shop around, you might be able to find an older version of StreetAtlas that has had the price slashed on it.

FWIW....
