I suppose this is a warning to other people with malfunctioning keyless entry. GET IT FIXED. Mine was completely unresponsive, hit the buttons on the remote, and nothing happened, lock the drivers door with the key, and other than locking that door, nothing happened. I assumed the ecu was fried, and it was harmless until I had the money to fix it. Wrong. I took a six hour trip to KS this weekend, and the rover made it there fine. While I was there, I went to unlock my truck and inadvertantly hit one of the buttons on the remote. That was definately not the first time I had pressed the button, but it was the first time the alarm went off. This was the only response I had ever had from it, and then it wouldn't shut off. Of course I tried to follow the instructions in the manual to turn it off, but it did nothing. I tried everything I could think of, including disconecting the battery and the alarm ecu.
So it was immobilized, and I was 150 miles from the closest dealer. I left it for the night, and went back out to start it again in the morning, and strangely enough, it started. I lucked out and drove it home.
The moral is, if its broke, fix it.
By the way, does anyone know of a mechanic in St. Louis that can fix it?

Speaking of keyless entry -- when I bought my 98 d1, I only got one remote. It fell out of my pocket when I was pulling a friends car out of a snow bank and I couldn't find it in the snow. Is there an aftermarket remote that can be programmed or do I have to go to a dealer?

You need to get a Land Rover remote. Since your disco is a 98, the dealer has to program it, But you don't need to buy it from the dealer. Some dealers will program it for free, and other charge around $15 to do it. There are several places on the web that can get you one, and I have also heard that they are often available on E-bay.
