Okay, Roverphiles, I have an Austin Gypsy due in tomorrow. How many Roverites know the signifigance of the Gypsy to Land Rover, and who has information on this vehicle?

Jamie seems to up on all that kind of stuff, and being in the Eastern time zone gets to DiscoWeb before the rest of us finish dinner. Looks like Jamie wins your prize. Does she get to borrow it for a week or something similar?

I cheated: one of the guys here referred me to a search engine recently. I saw Trevors post, typed "Austin Gypsy" in the search engine box, and it gave me the link I posted.

I can barely keep up with learning about my own truck, let alone a truck from 50 years ago -- it looks really cool though!

Ray, what time do the David Letterman and Jay Leno shows air on TV out there? :-)

Leslie,

Cool Link! Heartwarming to see the hand typed report rather than the cold computer generated specs we read today!!

Thanks, all! It arrived this morning, and their '72 Series Rover is also on it's way. There is definetly something familiar feeling about the Gypsy.

Austin Gypsies were a sort of cheap version of a Land Rover that had some "inovative" suspension and drive train designs. The "Flexitor suspension gave a smooth ride and good articulation for about 2000 miles or three months, whichever came first, in fact the Gypsy was worse than a LAnd Rover in almost every aspect. Much of the production of Gypsies went straight into storage, only to be used in the event of a nucear war or some simolar national emergency, and subsequently never ever used, occasionally they get auctioned off to the public, so the only ones yu do see are virtually brand new.

Jamie, they're on way past my bedtime-- 11:30pm accourding to the TV Guide. I don't watch cause I'm in dreamland by then. Shows (except Formula 1 and other races, and football games) are delayed broadcast so the west-coasters get things about 3 hours after you do.

Can't help wondering why they have it under Austin Champ though - wasn't the austin champ the "other" 4x4 they made that had a rolls royce engine - straight six - or something along those lines ?
