Mine is a 2000 DII. I've got the rear ladder and roof rack. The ladder is tight. I cannot detect any play in it or the roof rack. From every indication the rattle is coming from the rear door on the driver's side near the latch. It's not a constant rattle. It only happens when I hit a not so signifcant bump in the road. It is driving me absolutley crazy. I've tried to adjust the latch so that the door fits tighter but that has not solved the problem. Did I mention that this is driving me absolutely efin crazy?

Any ideas?

Maybe the license plate frame. Put some rubber stoppers on the corners, or some kind of shroud around it.

Yep. I would bet that is it. Put your radio on a rap station. Crank it up. Walk around to the back of the truck. Is the bass from the sub woofers making the license plate or license plate frame rattle? If that's it, Adam's suggestion for fixing it will work.

Adjust or replace the rear door wedge

On a D1 it's a little black plastic trapezoidal shape, I believe it's an isosceles trapezoid but I could be mistaken. Mounted vertically on the body; a complementing metal piece aligns with the wedge to hold the door firm. The plastic on the wedge wears away, thus allowing play in the rear door.

Man, seems a lot of things talk to me from the back of my Disco. They keep telling me "hey idiot, you could have avoided that pothole," or "man, you cant drive worth shit." Of course, I just figure it is stuff stored in the cubbies that are shakin'. But, back to sanity for a minute, have someone ride in back and listen for exactly where it is coming from. BTW, the subs rattling are what got to me, so I finally found a way to fix em. If anyone is interested let me know.

Bill, great suggestion. I've got rubber behind the frame. The license plate is as rattle proof as it can get.

Blue, I've made some adjustments to that trapazoid thingy. Back a few months ago I reset it's position to create a tighter seal. It worked for a little while but now the rattle is back and I'm out of room for any more adjustment. Any idea of a source besides the home office where I can get a replacement for that piece?

Adam, I struggled with this for awhile, putting all kinds of dynamat back there, rubber around the panel, you name it, I tried it. Then I went to Best Buy and bought some widgets that are suppossed to block the really low bass notes that a small speaker cant reproduce. I bought them with cutoffs suitable for a 6x9. No more rattle, I can hear my door speakers occasionally rattle but never the subs. I do think they are a litte less boomy than they used to be, however, but I dont listen to rap music so I figure that is ok.

I had this problem with the back door of my 2000 Disco. It drove me crazy too so I decided to pull the interior panel off the door. I discovered that there is a big hole in the door to allow for the spare tire mount to be mounted to the outside of the door. Over the hole in mine was a opaque plastic sheet. I turned my radio on loud with this panel off and noticed that this sheet was vibrating from the subs. I ended up putting a couple of sheets of dynamat in the door over this hole and other large gaps between the panel and the door. I also noticed that the plastic sheet stretched over one of the holes where a plastic push screw should have been snapped into right in the middle of the interior panel. Once the dynamat was in place and I had snapped this push screw in I had no other rattling problems with the back door.

One word of advice about removing the interior panel is TAKE YOUR TIME! Those stupid plastic push screws are fragile and you can easily break them off.

My brothers and sisters. I have found it. It was not my door at all. It was the passenger seat right behind the driver's seat. I convinced my 13 year old daughter to go ride with me to help me diagnosis where the rattle was coming from. The door was doing a ventriliquist job on me. I've skimmed over several post that talked about reat seat rattle but did not think it applied to me because I was convinced that the sound was coming from the door. I can't tell you how giddy I am to have found it and am on my way to a solution to making it stop.
