I had to think of something to get everyone's attention :-) Anywho, i need to know what the signs are for bad (cats) catalytic convertors. My 97' Disco is making a rattling noise while sitting at idle that seems to be coming from under the vehicle somewhere towards the front. It's a fairly loud noise. Someone mentioned to me that the matrix might have broken off (whatever that means)inside the cat. converter. Any input would be very helpful. Thanks.
-Unrelated plug here: If you haven't seen the movie Super Troopers, rent it immediately. Thats all.

Don't worry about it....bits break off periodically.....went through that 70k ago....ultimately the bits get small enough to pass
kinda like a kidney stone...

I had to replace the cats in my 96 this past summer, the noise got loud enough that it sounded like my engine was knocking.

Robin,

It's probably just your cats. Nothing to worry about unless you need to pass emissions. My D1 failed emissions this summer, once I put a new y-pipe in, most "bad" gasses were reduced by about 90% (25 gpm went down to 2.5 gpm).

Thanks,

Cats are cheap to get replaced. Do a search. I've read where some guys get them from Summit racing, pretty cheap - <$100. Or just go to Midas or whoever is the big muffler shop near you.

Chris won't do it 'cuz his nickname is "cheap ba$tard" :-)

Ah HA HA. And Yessss i agree. They do need to be replaced. What i'm really hoping is that Land Rover will replace them for free, 8 years or 80K miles. If anything i gotta get the noise fixed so it won't sound like there's marbles in my pipes. I'll check out the ideas above. Thanks fellas.
