I am looking for a late model...2000 to 2003 perhaps LRD2. My question is this: Is the Kalahari a version that has all of the most popular off road equipment or is it really a "sheep in wolf's clothing"? I like the overall effect, but if it really isn't any better at what it does than a standard D2 I guess I don't want to bother. They seem to come up for sale so infrequently anyway.

If your looking for an extremely capable D2, your best bet would be to buy a standard one and modify it yourself. Modified discos come up for sale every now and then. I think the kalahari edition just has some accessories and the painted hood. And the grey wheels which are nice, but nothing that cant be added to a regular D2, and nothing that greatly enhances its offroad ability.

Thanks for the advice Rick. I kind of thought that perhaps it was a marketing thing. Of the four years I mentioned, which is the most desirable? 2000, 01, 02 or 03?

You should get one with a CDL stud. an 00 or early 01. You canmake any disco like that one. It has the same size tires as mine, but a few more lights.

Eric, the D2's came out in '99. It's easy to retrofit a '99 with CDL too. My understanding is that from 2000-03, LR changed the T-case and then put CDL back in the truck in '04. Correct me if I'm wrong. I agree with everyone else though, buy a stock one and build it yourself. That's what I did.

Justin: It is nice. I like Ho's though: http://www.expeditionexchange.com/hochung/

Shit man... what am I talking about... I like mine! hehe

Billy: they stopped putting the CDL nuts on the transfer case in 2001. My buddy, Micah, has an 01 with a CDL nut. My '01 was built just a few months after his (May of '01... according to the dates in the doors) and I do not have the nut... yet.

Thanks for the Links Bill. Very Impressive vehicle. Sadly this one has to be commuter friendly for a 50mi a day roundtrip for my wife too. I was thinking that in 2000 they had a locking CD. I am sort of leaning in that direction because it appeals to my desire to be cheap as well! :-) I think I will just take my time and search for the right platform and start adding on from there.

Thanks all!

Eric

Eric,

None of the D2's come with a locking CDL as a standard feature. The last year they stopped with a locking CDL was the 98/99 D1's. And as others have said, you can retro fit early D2's with the CDL.

That Kalahari that Bill posted is a Safarigard buildup...lots of $$ for that one.

I called Mary at SafariGard to get an idea of what they wanted for it... "we're taking offers." I've gotten to know her well enough on the phone from my dealings with them... and she wouldn't budge... I can only imagine.

Thank you Alan. It wouldn't be the first time a sales associate "misquoted" something I guess. I sort of assumed that the one Bill posted was really high dollar. I am going to take my time and search around the area. I live just outside of Cincinnati, Ohio. I will probably keep my eyes peeled in the Lexington, Louisville, Indianapolis, and Columbus areas as well. Of course I will check here to see what's for sale as well. I bought an old Buick in Philly and a boat from NC, so you never know!

Eric,

I assume you want a D2 as you haven't mentioned the D1's and it sounds like you want it to be relatively road friendly. If so, then I'd say look for a city driven 99 D2 as they go for fairly reasonable prices. Maybe even a 2000 but the 99 D2's seem to be a nice setup with the ability to add the CDL back in easily and it has nicer road manners than the D1's. Plus because it's prices are fairly low, it makes a nice rig to buildup.

Yea, you come across different kinds of LR sales people. Those who are in the business of selling cars and it doesn't really matter what kind of vehicle it is (a car's a car type mentality) and then you have people like Alyssa who are LR enthusiasts who know these vehicles very well as well as the business side so you end up with the best possible deal. I'd say shop around and if you go with a dealer, find someone who you're comfortable and confident in. They can make a world of difference down the road.
