I am currently commuting a minimum of 650 miles per week. My disco gets about 11 miles to the gallon.

I started looking for a car to make the driving more bearable and I found what appears to be a good deal on a 95 Audi A6 AWD. It seems to be in real good shape. However, what can I expect for reliability from this car? It has about 110,000 miles on it. Aside from normal maintanance, are the any issues with these?

Thanks in advance

After driving your Disco the Audi should seem like a Civic?? :-)

I think like anything the previos owner and maintanence are the key to a reliable auto.

My wife drives a 2001 audi a4 avant with the 1.8t. We have like 58k miles on it. Great car, but much like the disco, if it's not maintained it can be a big headache. Old audis are good, just get it checked out first. The other issue is mileage, my modified 95 d1 makes 15-17mpg highway, our 01 4 cylinder audi makes 25mpg highway. My old commute to work was 68 miles round trip. I'd put in an average 22 gallons in the disco per week at the cost of about $38 per tank. The audi I'd have to put 14 gallon of gas a week at about $25 per tank. So I saved approx. $50 a month on gas. If you want a cheap commuter don't get a all wheel drive anything, get that civic. Audi parts are more expensive than rover parts and the v-6 will probably get you 22 mpg highway and 18 mpg city. I stopped driving her car to work and started driving the disco when I realized I only save $50. The drive was more entertaining with the audi, but not really any cheaper. Plus think about what you'll save on gas money and then what you'll spend on insurance for another car.

One of the best cars I owned was a 1986 Audi Coupe Gt.Non turbo or Quattro but was a fine car. Had a 2.5 cyl was very good on gas.

I have a '99 A4 Avant 1.8T. Fun car to drive, and easy to maintain. The only major problems in 75000 miles have been...

defective wheel bearing (warranty repair)
tie rod ends replaced (recall)
detached converter (warranty repair)
bad MAF sensor ($543 - most cars would be half that)

So parts are expensive. And mileage is surprisingly low, for a four-cylinder car - about 25 or 26 overall. If you're looking at an A6, look at mileage, and look at recall repairs to make sure they've been done.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I had been looking at economy cars such as civics and corollas but they didn't excite me at all (Yes, I know that's not the point). Also, I'm 6'3" and they didn't seem real comfortable. The Audi seemed a little better on both regards.

Andy, if I could get 17mpg like your Disco, I could probably live with that. I made 2 trips in real windy conditions and I actually got below 10mpg. I'm not knocking my Disco, I will probably keep it forever, but this is not what I bought it for.

I appologize for the carfax request. I didn't realize I was stepping into a sh#t hole.

Thanks again
Brent

I actually have a roof rack on the disco and a yakima ski and bike rack on the audi. An Audi will suffer the same way a disco can in reguards to mpg if you use that right foot to much. :-)

Brent some things to consider. As long as the Audi has been well maintained it should be fine. However, check for puddles in the front footwells after rain, I heard they tended to leak, but once repaired are fine. Also, I am not so sure about the gas mileage, but the Audi with Quattro is a big heavy car with only 172 horses and an automatic . I am not saying it wont be fast enough for you, but I bet it wont get much if any better than 19-20. I guess this is good compared to your Disco, but you could find a similair wagon with better mileage. My mom had a Volvo V70(850) with the 5 banger and it was a nice car. Probably would get about 28 mpg. I think the Audi is real nice, I was just throwing that out for ya.
