I've been reading some auto reviews in the Detroit News by Paul and Anita Lienert. These are perhaps the most clueless automotive hacks I have ever read. Take a peak.

god, those were horrible but on the upside maybe it will ispire a few less yuppie soccer moms to buy Discos, I cant see anybody that really plans on using the truck being turned of by that review.

I'm glad they're not Disco owners! I wouldn't want to be in the same category as them...

I love this part... "But that makes us wonder: how do they hold up in the grocery-store parking lot? That’s another story."

LMAO

He: A plus on the Discovery is all of the neat ways to store gear. I liked the little cubbyholes above the visors and the rear cargo nets built into the ceiling.

She: As somebody who lives for the new Tupperware catalogue, those were some of my favorite things about the Discovery.

Those kind of reviews just make the thing twice as cool:)

" Porterhouse there is a brown MDX in my parking spot, I want it towed immediately" Hmmm, Hmmm!

Heeeeeeeeeeeeeey, that's my car they're raggin' on!

From my recollections of shopping less than a year ago: All vehicles in the same class got near identical gas mileage.

If ye wants to ride high, ye'd better learn to haul your lard ass UP high.

I never got the rap on the breaks, though I hear it all the time. Once I learned to use ONLY the break, and NOT the break AND part of the accellerator pedal (G), it stopped just fine, no mushy feel in my Disco that I've ever detected.

As for the rest of the fine review, where was the CUP HOLDER review???? Christ almighty, if I hear one more freakin' thing about cupholders......bet they loved the Tahoe......talk about a cushy, tippy POS.....

Karen, needs more than Tupperware to thrill her :)

LOL - the only thing worse than living for the tupperware catalogue is admitting it in print.

i like this...

" The visibility is poor due to the rear center headrest and trunk-mounted spare tire. However, that headrest lowers when you flip down the rear center armrest. But that can be a pain."

im sure we all know just how difficult it is to put down an armrest..lol.. where do these people come from??

oh. my. god.

I don't know whether to laugh hysterically, (I thought I was reading a "Saturday Night Live" skit) or cry (and hope that Ford really does not take them so seriously).

"Antiquated and lumbering"? "Feels like you're driving a school bus"? I doubt he's EVER driven a school bus. Besides, it's a TRUCK, not a Cadillac! Anyway, this is the same kind of "appeal to the masses" crap that Consumer Reports caters to. So be it. I'd rather see soccer moms driving Tahoes and Exploders anyway. Leave the "exotic" vehicles to people who appreciate them for what they are, not because it makes the Jones' envious.

But, but, but, it DOES make the Jones' envious! My bro could have bought a Disco, but he bought an Xterra instead. He just about shit when I bought the Disco. Our last name? JONES, of course! LOL!

Karen, well, you know...... :)

...reminds me of watching the news these days...you pick the channel...keep feeding me more and more bullshit without context about shit that is meaningless so I don't pay attention to what's really going on.

Now, I am a Rover owner, and I dig my Disco, but that Disco article is right on for the masses who they are writing for.

People ask me all the time if they should buy a Disco. Sorry, but if I know they will never go off-road, my opinion is for them to look elsewhere.

If the Disco is to survive, it has to be accepted by the masses. Since it is not accepted by the masses because of real issues when compared to other SUV's, it will soon turn into a rebadged Explorer. Look at Jaguar. The new all wheel drive xk looks to me to be the same as a frickin' contour. Ugh.

My OWN review...

Since I drove all the "luxury" SUVs before putting down a deposit on a 2003 DiscoII (which I hear rumors I may get the 2nd or 3rd week of next month...Bonatti grey with ACE, black interior, xenons, nav and the HK stereo)I sort of feel qualified to consider that review "crap". I drove the Escalade, the X5 6 and 8 and the MBZ 6 and 8 and pretty much disliked each one. I only drove the Disco, a 2001 without ACE, because it was close to the BMW dealership and they said "sure..come drive it", so I did and I loved it. I said I'd order one before they did their nifty (paved) course in back of the dealership.
The Escalade is huge, enormously heavy and is still a Chevy Avalanche with a leather interior and cool rims. Its just too damn big and ponderous and leans into every turn. The X5 6 cylinder is underpowered, you feel the weight every second and its not a light car. Its also barely competent to handle wet roads and potholes. The X5 8 cylinder costs a whole lot of dough..like low 60s by the time you drive off the lot, and although faster and snappier, it still feels heavy. I also don't know why everyone raves about the BMW brakes, yes they stop the car but they just didn't inspire my confidence; perhaps because the car reminds you of how heavy it is all the time that your brain is thinking "nothing is going to counter this inertia".
The Mercedes ML series are minivans. They look like minivans and after driving them, I think they handle like minivans. I grant you, they are nicely appointed, safe and even rough-road capable minivans but when you sit behind the wheel it reminded me of my mom's Windstar (actually the windstar is more fun, less refined). The 6 cyl Benz is pokey but not terrible. The 8 cyl benz goes like mad but theres no feeling of torque, you can't even feel it shift...it just goes faster. My other car is a 66 Mustang, I WANT TO FEEL IT SHIFT...in fact I like to leave little black marks when I shift =)
The Disco felt heavy but well matched to its brakes and engine, even with the 4.0L. It leaned less alarmingly than the BMW and was less refined ( a plus) than the benz..and it doesn't have its own zipcode like an escalade which has two, one for the back and one for the front.
At any rate, I disregarded reviews like that one in making my decision.

They obviously didn't realize that the rear center headrest is completely removable (as are all 5 of the front headreasts).

Alyssa,

(sorry, catching up late here)

"They obviously didn't realize that the rear center headrest is completely removable (as are all 5 of the front headreasts)."

So true!! Amazing how many that does not even occur to

:)

Kim (but still lazy, and not removing them when I should, hehe)

All the car magazines give Land Rover Discoverys poor reviews for on-road driving. I like it though, it steers people away from our small community. But all of them say that the Disco will lay the smack down on any SUV in their luxury comparo's. Keep up the good work Motor Trend, Car and Driver and Automobile!
