I wouldn't mind doing without them but I guess they do protect the undercarriage. Inspection is coming up, so two questions:

- Anyone using aftermarket mudflaps and like them? Where did you buy them?

- Question for PA residents - Have you passed PA inspection without the rear mudflaps? I would like to replace them, but not before the inspection.

Yes, rear mud flaps are a requirement. This is the inspection code.
http://www.pacode.com/secure/data/067/chapter175/s175.80.html

PA inspections are tough as hell. I think it's interesting that removing sway bars is supposedly grounds for failure. I could be wrong on the details, but I think a mechanic can have his drivers license suspended for passing a vehicle that should have failed. There is some heavy penalty in anycase.

It gets rediculous though. We would install lamp guards for a customer. Take them off for an inspection, deliver the car and tell them they had to put the guards on themselves.

Here in MO they wave a wrench at it and you pass.

Those were the first thing to come off my truck, followed by the door sill ground effect crap, then the air dam. Those pieces probably weighed 40 pounds combined and added at least 2 inches of clearance at their lowest point. However, the mudflaps do serve a purpose, probably better suited to wet and snowy areas like PA? There is also part of the mudflap assembly that serves as a body mount for the rear fender panel.

I have a question though: Do they only make you keep the mudflaps on trucks that they came on, or do they force EVERYONE to install mudflaps? Kinda sounds like there must be a way around it due to discrimination or something :-)

Nick, will appreciate you checking back after your inspection this Friday. Is it the disco or the rangie you're bringing in? Were the mudflaps part of the standard equipment? Personally, if the inspection is not done by a dealer, I doubt they will know if the mudflaps were standard equipment.

Ian, thanks for the list. It would be most unlucky if any inspection mechanic goes down the whole list. Half of the vehicles on road will fail! And the inspection will cost more than the very expensive $70 they already charge.

Joseph, they don't force everyone to install mudflaps. What I heard was if they came with the truck, you must have them to pass. But how the heck will they know? I don't even know. Certainly plenty discos and rangies on road in PA without mudflaps.

A company here in SA has solved the mudflap problem. They use two aluminium extruded profiles that can slide into each other. The one is attached to the mudflap, the other to the truck. Then when you want muds flaps, you just slide them in place. Simple but effective. I couldn't find any pics of one on their website.
They are called Proto Engineering in Cape Town, South Africa.

Called the garage and they said that the mud flaps were not required. Looked up the PA Statute, Title 75, Section 4533 and found that the mud flap section only applies to trucks over 11,000 lbs, etc. It's the Disco... Arthur, do you do any wheeling in PA?

My mud flaps on my 2003 S were junk. On one side they were riveted on and the other they were a nut/bolt hack job from the factory. I guess they didn't pay the end of line repair guy enough OT that week. I yanked mine off since the nut/bolt flap didn't line up well and was already loose.

They'll come off sooner or later on their own. Better to remove than litter up some trail.

I have passed pa inspection 3 times with no flappers or anti sway bars, I just dont ask! There are several things that can fail you in pa that no, or most mechanics dont care about, Here are a few,
All fog and driving lights must work,
They must turn off when hi beams are turned on,
They must be below the front bumper
If they are above the front bumper, they must be covered
Your e-brake must work, but your anti lock brakes dont have to, and your air bags dont need to work eather, but if they are missing, well you failed???? go figure!

Ya know it's funny that in Oregon (the most liberal and "eco-friendly' state in the union) only has emmission standards and DEQ tests designated by county. And the only counties I know of that participates in DEQ tests are the ones in the Portland area.

You could be burning oil with no cats and a straight exhaust in any other county and it wouldn't matter (let alone for no mud flaps??!!).
