I know there is a guy on here regularly who plugs his Scout at every opportunity.. :-) Problem is, I cant rememeber who it is. Anyway.. Im looking into picking up an early 70s Scout and was wondering what should be a major concern with these trucks? Do they rust in certain areas?? Are there any models or versions with weaker components?? Any decent IH BBS out there?? Thanks.

Start here: http://www.binderbulletin.org/
and here: http://bbs.binderbulletin.org/forums/

- How early in the 70's? Very early 70's may have lighter weight components.
- Typical D44 axles F/R, Dana 20 XferCase, Warn hubs.
- Rust - aah, yes. Can be bad. Think 70's Detroit/Indiana rust prevent technology :-) None!
- That said, built from real steel.
- From 75+ IH went with 3/4 ton chassis to escape emissions requirements.
- Engines - 196 V4 (1/2 of 392), 304, 345, 392 V8's, Nissan Diesal

If you want a scout II the later the better. The last turbo diesels are particularly cool.

Somewhere in the mid 70s you got D44 disc brake front and if you have that you are ok.

345 is better than the 304, have not seen a 392 in a scout that came that way from the factory. 4 bangers are SLOW, non-turbo diesels are SLOW.

Rust is the primary enemy. Buy a southern/western truck if you can find it.

That exactly what I was looking for. Thanks. Muskys scout was the one i was thinking of, but the name "old scout" kept popping into my head. I found a 76 that came out of new mexico with a 345. I havent seen it yet, but that info helps. Thanks again.

yep rons right...392 never came in a scout, but they bolt right in.

But they will break a D44 rear end so fast that I wouldent reccomend it.

The D44's in scouts have super thick axle tubes compared to most D44's . the D44 trucks where all truley 3/4 ton trucks.

some of the really hard to find desirable parts to find are the texas bolt pattern dana 300 TC from a 1980 scout II and the wide ratio T19 4 speed both units are rock solid and will lend a very low crawl ratio to your rig when used in conjunction.

things to pitch...prestolite Dizzy , stock 2 row rads and carter thermoquad carbs.

all in all scouts are built with some of the best components ever put into 4x4's
