I am ordering an R380 to replace one gone tits-up in my '96 Disco 4.0 V8. The vehicle is inaccessible to me right now so I can't get a hold of the transmission serial number, but I know there are different variations of the R380................does anyone know what I need to ask for?

Thanks.....Barry

You probably want a "K" box as that's an improvement over the original "J" box that probably came on your truck and has obviously crapped out. The "L" box is for the diesel Rovers and will not fit a V8. I believe the major difference between the "J" and "K" boxes is that the "K" boxes have some critical part (input shaft?) cross-drilled to aid lubrication, which was the problem with the "J" boxes crapping out.

You should check out Ashcroft transmissions as they manufacture new and rebuilt R380s that are an improvement durabilty-wise over the original factory boxes. I've got 30K miles behind a 4.6 on an Ashcroft R380 so far with no problems. I believe Atlantic British is their sole distributor in the US.

I would avoid getting a new box through your LR dealer -- you never know what they're going to pull off the shelf and pass off as "new" -- maybe an old "J" box that hasn't been updated.

Also, I would use synthetic Redline MTL (manual transmission lubricant), which is supposed to be the best for these trucks.

Good luck!

The cross drilled input gear is in the transfer case- nothing to do with the transmission. If the mainshaft of your transmission is gone, you need a transmission and the updated input gear for your transfer case. Ashcroft does some modifications to their boxes that supposedly helps synchros from going out. You can buy a new box from LR for what AB wants for a rebuilt one, and no, Ashcroft will not sell to an individual in the US.

and if you gearbox mainshaft is toast there is an risk that metal from gearbox shaft has enterd the transfercase too and risk for failure even there.

Get the most recent one available and also purchase the updated input gear.

MAKE SURE YOU DO NOT ORDER A DII R380, THE PART CATALOG AT THE DEALER WILL AUTOMATICALLY SUPERSEDE TO THE DII R380.

You also want a new pilot bushing and a new three piece clutch kit./ In an abudance of caution I would also get the new little fork dealy on the clutch fork that always breaks.

I second Ron's comment on the clutch. Put a new one in while you have everything torn apart and you will only have the cost of the part, no labor.

Think how aggravated you would be to have the clutch go out a month or two after you do the tranny_ swap.

I swapped out my R-380 in 2002 and did the clutch at the same time, because the clutch had last been changed by the PO and I had no idea how many miles it had on it.
