I called a local rover shop and they do a ton of work and good work at that. I need to drop my oil pan and was looking for a new gasket, they told me they never use them and they just use the liquid gasket stuff called "right stuff" Is that all I need to do , will that seal enough, and how much is too much to use

I always use a cork gasket from Rovers North. I posonally don't like putting RTV on the oil pan because the stuff that squish out the side could fall inthe sump and re-clog your oil pick up screen. But, that's just me. The dealer uses Hylomar form-a-gasket stuff.

"could fall inthe sump and re-clog your oil pick up screen." I completely agree with this. My D1 at about 180k miles had an issue with the clogged p/u screen. I dropped the pan, and sure enough, a nice chunk of that crap is what was causing my blockage. I did not replace the gasket, but used Hylomar very sparingly, so as it wouldn't ooze into the inside of the pan on replacement, doing exactly what Gabriel said:-) Hope your rig is cleaner than mine, dropping the pan was a f'n mess.m I recommend safety glasses to keep the crap out of your eyes.. I speak from experience..

Use the "right stuff" it is an RTV gasket maker, but doesn't ooze like silicone RTV - if you use it sparingly and sensibly. A cork gasket is absolute shit compared to using the "right stuff"

$12 a can, worth every penny.

Use 'The Right Stuff'.

I used right stuff with my oil pan. Hard to imagine how even a proper install of normal RTV would cause "chunking".

As for the cork gasket, I have little use for using stock stuff that leaks like a sieve. If the damn thing worked in the first place, I'd have used one as a replacement. I used very few of LR's stock gaskets. And my truck doesn't leak anymore (except that damn PS hose).

Also used Right Stuff. Have dropped the pan more than once and no bits have broken off from around the seal. 1/8" bead.
