My brakes are OK still but are getting down there. The LF rotor; however, seems to be warped a bit since during heavy braking it wobbles the steering, and on medium baking it throbs - if you know what I mean.

Anyway, I was wondering if anyone has had any bad things to say about Delphi Lockheed pads and rotors. They seem to be a good price right now at Rovers North.

I want to replace the front rotors, partly because I think they need it. But also because it will give me an excuse to open up that LF caliper and replace one of the pistons (corroded - which is probably why the pads wear uneven, which is probably why the rotor seems to be warped.) Any considerations to keep in mind for this job? Am I safe just following the Haynes manual? Am I going to get fluid all over the place and have to rent a car for two weeks to finish a job that should have taken 4 hours?

Pads = easy
Pads and rotars = not easy, but not complicated, able to do at home right?
Rebuild one calipher, new pads, new rotors = ???

Never rebuilt a caliper, but the pads and rotors weren't too tough. The only hard bit was getting the original rotors off the hubs.

They're a press fit and were a bit of a bear to get off.

Take some pics while you do it and then we'll all know! :-)

Check the wheels bearings while you're in there. If they need replacing, which is likely, give AutoZone a call. The bearing and race are Timken SET 37 and they're only $13.99 (you'll need four) a set compared to more than twice that from the usual suspects.

Take $4.49 of the money you just saved and get Mobil One grease for packing the bearings. Mobil One offers superior lubrication, is easier to clean up and doesn't stink like regular grease.

Also, while you're on the phone with AutoZone ask about rebuilt calipers and I think you'll find it's cheaper to let them do the work (last I checked the Lockheed front calipers were $49.95) than messing around with it on your own.

As far as separating the rotor from the hub, that's what a BFH was invented for, just don't get carried away! Also, if you find funny looking bolts holding the two pieces together don't worry a twelvepoint socket will work just fine on them.

Lastly, if you repack or replace the bearings remember to order new oil seals and a couple of lock washers.

ooooo... that's good info. So AutoZone carries Lockheed for Rovers? Or are you saying that the rebuilt calipers at RN for $95+ are a rip off? Or both?

And I assume Lockheed is a good brand to go with.

I have had nothing but good luck with the roversnorth rebuilt calipers. They come with pads installed (aftermarket) and it was clear all the pistons were new and genuine. I would do both unless you were sure the other front was fine. I thought autozone had only rear calipers but I don't know.

Castrol GTLMA brake fluid. Timken bearings, genuine hub seals.

As far as rotors I would personally recommend genuine, brembo, then lockhead in that order with a preference to the genuines as it is not a job I like to do and the cost differnce was not that great.

As far as RRC's go, I always thought that the non-vented Lockheeds were OEM but I might be mistaken. Afterall, up until late '88 or early '89 even the master cylinder was a Lockheed. My experience with the Lockheed rotors and pads has been good, regardless. I also like Ferodo pads as well.

Give AutoZone a call about the calipers. I did my front brakes last month and bought Lockheed rebuilt calipers from a regional chain here in CT and paid $74.95 for each (including anti-rattle springs and cotter pins) only to have a saleman at AutoZone tell me he had the same calipers for $49.95. At least I was able to save on the Timken bearings.

I would never say that the calipers from RN are a rip off. I'm sure they are quality rebuilds and if, in fact they include pads and hardware, $95 is not a bad deal at all. It's just that sometimes (rarely) you can get a bargain through the big chains too.

I wouldn't recommend rebuilding a caliper. It can be done. I've done several, but finding the rebuild kit is going to be harder and probably more expensive than getting aftermarket calipers. Got some rebuilt ones for about $75. Don't forget to bleed (the brakes, although no doubt other blood will be shed) and good luck.
