Posted a week or so ago about no heat in the D2, with responses to check my coolant level. It was low and I filled to proper level and got my heat back. Now the coolant has dropped again (to the bottom of the bottle) after about a week. There are no obvious leaks that I can see anywhere in the engine compartment. What are some probable causes? Anything that I can check myself or should I just head to the dealer? By the way, the truck is a 2000 with 72K miles with all recomended service done. |

Same thing happened to me and I took it to the dealer. They found that my head gasket leaked, and I did the job myself becaause they quoted me $4000! It wasnt bad. It might be the valley gasket too! Good luck |

Fill up again and clean all of your coolant hose conections really well, pay really close attention to your level after you drive it each time check for very small leaks or whitish residue on the coolant hose connections that might indicate where your leak is comming from. Quite simply if your car is sucking up coolant it could be that it's just really low and needs to be filled completely or your loosing your coolant somewhere!!! I found a very small leak on my radiator fill plug, it was so small that I was not able to detect it at first, that is until it burst in the middle of the highway!!! You can also take it to any mechanic that can perform a pressure test, that will definitely tell you if you have a leak!!!! |

You might want to pressure-test it, its probably only leaking slowly and when driving. The dealer at least can plug in a pump and check it in 5 minutes. Mine was leaking at the back seal of the water pump, and it was quite obvious when it was pumped up. You could get a cheap pump, pressurize it yourself, and then leave it for an hour to see where its coming out, if its an external leak. Dean |

got to agree with Dean, buy a pressure tester from Napa or other auto parts store, pump and leave. if you drop pressure and see a leak, cool fix it. if you drop pressure and don't see a visable leak, chances are it's in the head gasket. marc |

Most common things (in order): Leaking rad (check seams on side where plastic meets metal) Leaking throttle body/throttle body hoses Leaking intake gasket (check at back of engine) Leaking other hose (upper is the worst) Bad water pump Leaking head gaskets Dropped liner or porous block (check inspection plate in bell housing) Leaking heater core Ron |

Just noticed the rad on my 99 D2 is weeping @ the bottom pass side. very little coolant loss (~1/4 of the overflow tank) but new one is on the way. Is the R&R pretty straightforward? any hidden problems? |

Filled coolant today to the proper level and drove it around for a few hours. The level seemed to have dropped again maybe 1-2" from the cold level. I had the radiator replaced under warranty - of course now i am at 53k. Drove it last weekend on a long trip-6 hrs at 90mph with no problems. It seems like the coolant level gets a certain point and then goes no lower. Any easy ways to detemine where the leak is coming from? thanks. |

Often Rovers only leak when pressure tested cold. You have already been advised to to a pressure test, but be aware that tests run on hot and cold engines may give different results. Often a leak that shows up cold will not be seen hot, and vice versa. |

ok - thanks. But, is it maybe just normal to have the level reside below the cold line. It just goes to a few inches below this level and just stays there - doesn't seem to get lower. Any recommended products to stop the leak if one exists? This is a fairly new radiator. thanks. |

bluesman - mine is the same, it sits lower than the level indicates, and then stays there. |

Ok - good to hear I guess. I hadn't checked it in a while until last weekend. Filled it before the long haul and then...it went back down. Same thing yesterday but only drove around town for a few hours. I guess it goes out the overflow tube. Thanks. |
