I have a 1996 D1 and everytime I hit any sort of bump/pothole the rear door sounds like its going to fall off. I have inspected the rubber 'wedge' and it looks in good condition, I have also Loctited the screws on the inside of the door that secure the latching mechanism, and the bolt the latch hooks over on the actually body of the car is tight. Where to I go from here?

I posted this same thing just the other day and am still at a loss. I'm curious to know how many other people are having this same issue. Is it just a few of us or does everyone go through this?

I believe its a common problem, the weight of the door combined with the spare wheel hanging on it is a lot for the latch to take. Lazy dealer has looked at it twice, same run around "we could not find any problem". The only posts I have seen talk about replacing the rubber wedge, which does not seem a problem in my case.

Solution to my door rattle identified:

Since this was driving me absolutely efen crazy I convinced my 13 year old daughter to ride with me and listen for the rattle noise that I THOUGHT was coming from my back door. Come to find out it was actually coming from the driver's side rear seat. I remember there being several posts on here about the rear seat making a rattle but since I thought the noise was coming from the rear door I didn't pay any attention to those posts. So, with that said, let this be a little bit of advice to you guys that believe you have a rear door rattle. You may have a rear seat rattle and it just sounds like it's your rear door.

If your spare is on the cargo door, have you checked to see if anything is in it?

Sometimes when I'm up on my roof, I drop stuff and it lands inside the back of the spare.

Good Luck, Jamie

Do you carry stuff in the rear pocket? I have misc. stuff including some tools and when I go off roading and come down on something, it rattles like crazy. I put some of that rubberize stuff you use to line kitchen drawers and it helps some but it doesn't deaden the metal to metal of the tools.

I have a 96 and has the same problem. This is easily fixed by adjusting the "striker post"(?) location. Since my door was so shakey I figured the door needed to be pulled closed more so I moved the post towards the front a bit. Five minute fix. No more noise.

Has anyone replaced the tail door glass? Wondering how tough this will be.

My '96 tail door had a failed seal at the bottom edge which caused it to corrode totally away at the bottom.

The dealer got me a door by persuasion with the regional warranty guy ($2700 saved!) but I have to install it myself.

Also check hinges havnt sagged. When they do (and can be adjusted relatively easily) the bottom left hand corner hits the body opening panel. There will be tell tale paint missing.
