AFter four years of troublefree Discovery ownership, apparently my luck has run out. I have a 96 D1 with a five speed and 128,000 miles. Tonight, it has decided that it has far too many miles on it, and it needs a break. So, something broke. I can select any gear, let the clutch out and nothing happens. Clutch and transmission seem alright, because if I lock the center differential and let out clutch the trans engages and send power to the axels. But, it makes some very unhealthy noises in doing so. So, what has broken inside the transfer case? What will it take to fix it, and at what cost, both emotionally and monetarily?

Thanks to all in advance for their help and guidance.

Cheers,

Ted Haug

Ted hi
When you lock the cdl do you move or does it just make "unhealthy noises"? When I broke my rear diff it did the same (97 manual). I was at a stop sign let out on the clutch and a boom and no movement. I locked the cdl and had a noisy ride home about 6 blocks. If it is the transfer case I can't help but if it's the diff. then it is not so bad. Max

Max,

Yes, when you lock the CDL she does move, but makes some very disturbing sounds as you let the clutch out, especially if the front wheels are turned. No movement at all if the CDL is unlocked.

I would be really happy if it is just the rear diff.

Thanks for the response.

Ted
Do you have someone who can listen to see where the noise is coming from? I was thinking more the front diff. Were you driving when it stopped or did you jump in and no go?

Max,

Here is a little more information on the truck: I really no longer own the truck. I sold it to a friend about three weeks ago. I had driven the truck for four years, put nearly fifty thousand miles on it, maintained very well, and it was extremely reliable. So, the truck isn't really in my care anymore, but I know my friend is not abusive. Although, I know he is probably a little harder on the truck than I ever was.

Anyhow, to answer your question. He had been driving it and it had been fine. Went to do some shopping. He came out, went to leave the parking lot of a local store, and as he was pulling out of the driveway. Bang, no more power to the axels. Engine running happily. He thought he ran over something.

He called me, because he thought he had done something incorrectly. I try getting her to move, and the only way she will go is with the CDL locked. And it sounds as though the unhealthy noises are coming from the front of the rig. Either front differential or transfer case. It doesn't sound like it is the rear diff.

Could it be the front diff?

Thanks again!

Ted

From your description I'd guess that one of your front cv joints broke, or possibly the front diff failed. Jack up the left and right front, one side at a time and see if one doesn't spin free - if so, that's the blown side.

I would have a 2nd person listen and see if you can isolate the noise. I would think that if you unlock the cdl and run her through the gears with no noise that it is not the transfer case. If you can't isolate the noise drain the diff and see how many pieces of gears come out or you can feel. Max

Thanks guys for the encouraging news. If it is the front diff, what all will I need to purchase and replace? I will try and jack up the front end sometime today.

Thanks to all!

If it moves with the CDL locked, my first guess would be a cv joint. Second would be a u-joint. The front diff is a possibility, but less likely than the other two.

Thanks Axel, so far the diagnosis seems to be getting better. Would jacking up each side and check for free wheeling be the next logical step? And then the side that doesn't turn, will be the likely culprit? Any other things that I should try that might aid in the diagnosis?

Thanks again to all.

Cheers,

Ted

Many thanks to all those who gave their advice. Seems as though the right CV joint has retired; jacked the truck up today, and turning the right front wheel results in some very unpleasant noises. Sounds as though CV joint is turning over the splined shaft.

I have pulled rear axels to replace the rotors, any instructions for tearing into the front hub/axel assembly?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks to all of those who offered their input, and to those who work so hard keeping this great website running. You guys are awesome.

With much appreciation.

Ted

It is pretty easy to take apart. Just keep working your way into the axle. You do need a snap ring pliars, otherwise it is amost as easy as the rear rotors. The inner shaft may have sheered with the cv.

Thanks Ron,

I tore into it on Tuesday, pretty easy go....much like the rear as you said. Cage around the bearings gave up the ghost. Swivel housing still full of grease, I guess the new owner had the steering wheel cranked pretty hard to the left, applied alot of gas and dumped the clutch. And BANG... no more go.

My replacement CV joint arrived today, $160.00 shipped to my door. Not too bad, considering the dealer wanted $540.00 for one. What the hell are those dealers smoking and where can I get some?

Oh well, I guess I will be putting it all back together on Saturday.

Many thanks again to all who offered up their advice. Can't say enough good things about this list. Makes me miss the old Disco, well at least I still get to work on it, and that's the best part about owning a Land Rover, right?

Cheers for now,

Ted
