This was well worth the time and effort. After installing OME HD shock and springs, the rubber couling started to fail with in 6 months and the vibration started. After the conversion, there are no vibes. Very nice. THe vibes were so bad that if I had a full cup of cofffee in the cup holder it would spill out due to the vibrations. The hardest part ofthe entire conversion was removing the center peg. The end was so buggered up that I could not use a slide hammer or puller to remove it. I had to reley on my trusty 4.5" grinder and carefull cut off the center peg and pinion flange until I could get to the bolt. After that everything went smoothly unit I started to remove the shaft on teh trasercase end. Two of the four nuts rounded over and were a bitch to get off. Lucky for me I have set of nut extractor from craftsman that dig into the rounded nut and takes them off like a socket. If it was not for those two things it would have take only a few hours in stead of a day and a half. All in all well worth it. If any one is consdierng this upgrade make sure you have the right tools.

Brad & Garrett,

I changed over to OME HDs front and rear about 8 months ago and replaced the U-Joint about 6 months ago. This past week I've got serious vibration- similar to the "coffee cup dancing in the holder" syndrome. Was just looking at getting a custom drive shaft thinking perhaps this was the problem- but could you explain what you did again? Replacing the rubber coupling might work, but where did you get the part and what center peg are you referencing?

Any help appreciated.

I went through the same evolution on my D1. GBR rear shaft and new flange did the trick. Look on this site, under the "tech" section. You'll find a picture of the GBR shafts under "drive shafts", and a great write-up about the conversion from roto-flex to u-joint under "rotoflex to U-joint conversion".

Chris

I replaced my rubber coupling and drive shaft from a 97-99 Disco1 drive shaft that I bought from Roverland parts in FL. http://www.roverlandparts.com/parts.htm It cost $125 and included shipping to my house in northern New York(way up north)I thought it was a good deal.
Here is the link to the tech section on the conversion. It was very helpfull. http://www.discoweb.org/rotoconversion/index.htm

I thought about a custom drive shaft, but cost factor was too high for me. I took the risk and went with a stock rear drive shaft that has u joints on both ends. I picked up the 4 bolt pinion flange kit from Nathan at Discount Rover and the space ring from Rovers north which is local to me. The kit was about $50 and the space was $11. You should check to see if there are any cracks in the rubber coupling. If so, that is most likely the cause, but the vibe can also come from loose U jionts. When I put on my OME HD, the front drive shaft U joint became loose and I had to replace them. I beleive they were starting to fail and the lift brought the problem to the surface.
