We previously purchased a 94 disco, and when cold, the transmission won't shift out of first unless you run it up to about 3200 rpms for a while, or until it warms up. The rover has spent most of its life in a warm tropical climate for most if not all its life and now is in the colder northeast( if that helps). After it warms up, it shifts fine.

Thank-you Dwebbers

I am asking. It doesn't seem normal to me because we also have a Range Rover classic, and disco2 that shifts right through the gears even when cold. I am thinking maybe the climate change might have damaged something in the transmission. 3200 rpms seems quite high, and the engine screams. Any ideas would be great.

Thank-you!

Sounds to me like you have the wrong type of oil in your gearbox.
Drain and refill with correct oil, Manual transmission with Dexron IID (ATF) , yes, automatic transmission fluid in a manual box
ONLY the transfer box uses SAE 90 oil.

Oh, is it a manual? I was assuming automatic.

I will bet it has a auto box with more then 100k???

this is a cronic problem with ZF boxes.

a clean filter and fresh fluid includding 1 quart of lucas trans-fix will make it better, but only a complete trans job will "fix" it.

I have had a number of MB's that have done it, my high mile disco is starting to and I am sure at some point my 750il will. its a ZF thing:-)

the good news is that it rarely causes a problem and once it is warm they shift just fine. I had a 300e That did it for the last 6 winters but yet still shifts fine when warm.

some people will adjust the shift modulator to require less over all pressure to shift but I would not think of this because it causes more slip between shifts ...slip causes heat and heat is what does in autotrannies.

Morel: Let it warm up it will be fine

Brian, I just responded to your e-mail that you sent. My problem was a stuck throttle control valve in the valve body. But your problem may be different as others have said.

Alan Stuart

mine did the same, you most likely have low transmission fluid...
is there a trans filter to worry about too?
thanx

Hey guys, thank-you for all of the posts. On sunday, I discovered a huge lake of transmission fluid under the rover. I was able to look around underneath, and it looks like a seal that has totally failed. I was going to check the throttle valve, but didn't have the time. So I decided to take it to a transmission shop to get it looked at. As I was driving it over there, the engine began to sound like a diesel! Then the oil pressure light came on! I checked the oil level, and it has plenty of oil in it. Any ideas?

Thank-you for the help!

It's probably a little late, but for anyone else who may have the same problem, the valve body needs to be rebuilt. I had the same problem in my 94. I rebuilt the valve body (pretty complicated if you don't know what you are doing or if you don't have a good memory) and solved the problem. As far as your diesel sound, don't know man. Sounds like the disco curse is working on yours. The lucas products are great, but I'm not too sure if I'd put it into my trans. Good luck.
