What are your thoughts on Interco tires with these heavy trucks? Mostly the Thornbirds and TruXus and SSR. I know some of you ride the TruXus tires but I have not heard much on the other selections.

Feed back would be appreciated.

Do NOT get the thornbirds if you drive on the street a lot. I have worked at several 4x4-centric tire shops and we have always had problems with the thornbirds. The thornbirds are a PITA to balance, most times nearly impossible. A lot of the ones we have received are out of round. There are some shops that have a tire cutter that can "true" an out-of-round tire. If their has ever been any logging in your area you will find every damn rut in the road since they are a Bias-Ply tire.. Another problem I noticed in Montana was the tires would chip and cut more than other tires during winter (Michigan). For the most part they look cool and are considered a good all-around off-road tire. On most trail only vehicles they should be fine.

The SSR's are a good MT. The set I had were unbalancable. This was just a fluke. My set was screwed up at the factory when the tires were "pre-balanced." I have sold a lot of SSR's and talked to many owners. Most people like them a lot. They do wear down faster than a lot of other MT's of similar price. In return they grip better than a lot of similarly priced MT's. Never had a problem with chipping on the SSR's. They are generally more noisy than the TrXus MT's because they do not have the siping of the TrXus.

I think the following are a few of the reasons a lot of people run the TrXus Radials:
1 Radial
2 Correct Load Rating
3 Quite Smooth ride (never had complaints)
4 Side Biters (good look & functional)
5 Chip and Cut resistant (never had complaints)

As far as Intercoīs go, I had the 265x80x16 TSL Radials, and they were Ok for 3 years, eventhough their sidewalls sucked and I had 4 of the 5 with tubes!!!
The Thornbirds are no go.
Íīll be swapping my current Simex ET 35s to TSL SX 35 for offroad use, and will groove them for better performance offroad.
For onroad duties, Iīll be getting a set of 35x12.5x15 Trexus STS as well.
For an allround tire, the SSR is hard to beat, however, I am SO not keen on radials!!!
I was also very impressed with the Trexus on teh Pathfinder of a buddy in mud and snow in the 31x10.5 flavor, so If you can go the 33x10.5 (or equivalent thereof), itīd be great.

I had the 32x10.5 TSL Super Swampers and liked 'em. Noisy as hell on pavement, but they rocked in the mud. Balance was no problem.

I don't know anything about the TruXus, but I originally asked my local 4x4 supplier for the Thornbirds and he wouldn't sell them to me - he said he's seen too many come apart, so stay away from them.

Ross, if you're going to get some mud tires, how about keeping your street tires on your stock rims, and getting some steel rims for off-roading. This way you've got an extra set "just in case". Also, if you switch to 15" rims, tires can run $30-80/tire cheaper. You can get 15" rims for $50-55 from Gulf Coast Rovers. So, in 2 sets of tires, it's paid for itself.

Ross,

First off, I'll say that I've never run TruXus or Thornbirds firsthand. However, I've heard nothing but bad stuff about the Thornbirds. Supposedly a crappy tire that's hard to balance and of dodgy build quality. Add to that, a friend who had them on his truck claimed they were HORRIBLE in the rain.

I can't really say anything one way or the other about the TruXus, sorry.

I've run the SSRs which I was pretty happy with. A great soft tread for off road and not too terribly loud on road. But they don't have a tremendously long tread life. If you do alot of daily driving with your truck, you may want to keep them as an extra set of wheeling tires that you swap on for the summer months.

Thanks,
Nathan Hindman

the truxus are not super easy to balance either and some of mine took a lot of lead to do so.

not a super long life if you run them every day, but that is one of the reasons they are grippy...soft rubber.

totally suck in the rain. in fact, i was running them every day until the first good rain came. now, for me, they are dedicated trail tires and i run dunlop rover rt's daily.

if you don't mind the above stuff, then they have worked pretty well...

Well, if the Trexus are not street worthy, then itīd be best if you get bias just as well. feedback of the STS version ONROAD...?? They seem like a good all terrain variant to the BFG AT

Ross,
I have 265/70R16 SSRs on Wolf NATO rims with a 2" lift ('96 D1). The tires took a lot of weight to balance; about 9.5~10 oz. each. However, I must say that off-road they have been great for the trails we run (loose soil, mud, snow, etc.) and there is enough siping in the center to keep them quite quiet and well behaved on the road/highway (I can hear the turn signal, at criusing speed), as well as reasonable in snow and rain, on-road.
Since it is so hard/expensive to find my desired XZLs, I will likely continue with the SSRs and may even go larger - if I can still lift them ;-) The combination of the SSRs and NATO wheels is VERY heavy 8^O

I have been running the TruXus 265-75/16 tires on our 03'Disco for about 8 months now and love them. I was concerned about there ability in the snow but they work very well. They also took alot of weight to balance but seem to ride good. Off road they work great. We have 3 trips to Moab on them and they are holding up great. All in all after 8000 miles I would recomend them to anyone who wants a larger MT tire.

I've got about 6,000 miles on my TruXus on my '97 XD. No problems at all. They work great in the snow, rain, dry...whatever. Just need more power from my 4.0L engine.

I've got 33" Truxus on my Jeep and love them! I'd recommend over anything for a daily driver. Had TSLs before but being bias they flat spot and they aren't siped. This was big for me on a daily driver. They do well in both rain & snow here in Pennsylvania ...

my ten cents.

Well here's my 2 cents. Decent traction with this tire BUT you had better get really good road hazard coverage. I went through 3 sidewalls in 1 month with these tires. Replaced them shortly after with Goodyear MT'R's and never had another flat. All the sidewall damage occured on the trails.
