I've read all... ok, almost all of the ABS threads- Mine is intermittent on a regular basis- If I punch it during the 0-5/9 mph self test the light extinguishes- then after a bit (5 minutes to an hour) the abs engages on dry pavement and or the light comes on. In previous posts, there is much mention of "cleaning" and reseating sensors- since it's down in the swivel ball isn't it normal to have grease on it? If not then I have other issues… After removing it there is was the grey one shot on the bottom of the sensor. Also, how far below the top of the upper swivel pin housing/seal does it seat? I've seen posts which recommend a screwdriver width gap- and others which say to pound it in with a drift and let it self-gap???? Thirdly....has anyone had any real luck diagnosing a bad sensor by checking the resistance?

Thanks
Peter

First of all - there is no "cleaning" of an ABS sensor - like you said, they are bathed in either oil (front) or road grime (rear).

You can reseat the sensor and to do that press it down full until it hits the sensor ring on the CV joint. Sometimes a "light" (very light) tap is needed to get it down all the way if there is crap built up in the swivel pin. Anyway - the sensor will self gap as soon as you drive.

Sounds like your's is an intermittently bad sensor which will be the hardest to track down without a testbook or autologic equippped shop. A good sensor should ohm at about 980-1K, but that will usually only tell you if it is open (bad) or not (good) which doesn't sound like your problem.
